Between a rock and a hard place
This paper examines disability and climate injustice among rural livelihoods in Kenya and Uganda, foregrounding the importance of understanding, respecting and embedding the lived experiences of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in climate adaptation practice. Previous studies have highlighted the need to approach transformative adaptation through interventions that address the unjust knowledge and power relations that create vulnerability. Social…
Piloting a co-created local and alternative food network involving professional buyers in Norway
We can obtain knowledge about how sustainability transitions can take place through experimenting with niche-activities. An alternative food network (AFN) called Green Parallel was co-created through action research in an agri-food living lab and was piloted in 2019 and 2020. The purpose was to contribute to more organic produce in localized food systems and improve communication between producers and professional buyers (e.g. specialty stores, r…
Disentangling how the built environment relates to children's well-being
Neighborhood green spaces, facilities and population density as predictors of activity participation among 8-year-olds
This population-based study underscores the importance of access to a variety of venues and opportunities for different activities in the immediate neighborhood surroundings and in the greater community to support participation in physical activity and organized and social activities in childhood
Re-creating self-identity and meaning through occupations during expected and unexpected transitions in life
The present study explores occupational engagement during expected and unexpected transitions in life, and how self-identity and meaning, situated in the context, is created and re-created through the daily occupations. We use case examples of children with disabilities, adults with acquired brain injury, older adults with stroke, and people with serious somatic illness who are undergoing rehabilitation. The cases are drawn from previous studies …
Integrating occupational and public health sciences through a cross-national educational partnership
Complex social issues, sometimes referred to as ‘wicked problems’, influence the conditions of everyday life and the occupations these conditions afford, which are key determinants of health and well-being. Education is an important arena through which social transformation of oppressive conditions can be promoted and enacted. At the same time, interdisciplinary approaches have been recognized as being essential for addressing ‘wicked problems’. …
Finding meaningful occupation in refugees' resettlement
Refugee populations are particularly vulnerable to marginalization and have reduced social networks. In the present study we explored whether, how, and why participation in choir singing, as an example of an everyday occupation, could be of significance for refugees in their transition to a new daily life in a Norwegian municipality. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 5 participants with refugee backgrounds recruited from a multicultu…
Peer Victimization and Related Mental Health Problems in Early Adolescence
Peer victimization is a widespread phenomenon especially prevalent in early adolescence. This study investigates the prevalence of peer victimization and its association with mental health problems and impact on everyday life, and the possible mediating effect of parental and peer support. Data are based on a cross-sectional health survey ( N = 9,707) among adolescents (10-13 years) and their parents ( N = 8,210). The Strengths and Difficulties Q…
Shaping Occupational Possibilities for Norwegian Immigrant Children
Elementary school education is a key occupational arena for the integration of immigrant children. In this study conducted in Norway, questions about how best to support the education of immigrant children arose partly due to their poorer performance in primary school testing. A critical discourse analysis of the construction of the problem of the educational gap between Norwegian and immigrant children was conducted drawing on a sample of 20 new…
