The Global Perspective and the Issue of the State
This article addresses the problem of the ambivalent relationship that Global History has entertained with the Issue of the state. On the one hand, Global History is critical towards the “methodological Nationalism”, and therefore tends to devalue also the role of the state, as most global historians share a certain mistrust for conceptual abstractions and prefer making use of terms such as politics and government rather than that of state. On th…

Dopo l'Unitŕ. Forme e ambivalenze del legittimismo borbonico
From their exile in Rome, following Italian unification, the Bourbons tried to promote a political protest against the Piedmontese government in the southern provinces of the kingdom of Italy. The best known aspect of this protest was the so-called brigantaggio (brigandage) in the countryside, particularly in the years immediately following unification. But the party was also at work in the towns, at least until the middle of the 1860s. Based on …
Notables, Bourgeoisie, Popular Classes, and Politics: The Case of Milan at the End of the Nineteenth Century
In recent years Italian social historians have devoted increasing attention to the nature and morphology of the nineteenth-century bourgeoisie. Traditional historiography viewed the bourgeoisie as key par excellence to the political change played out between 1859 and 1871. It was seen, on the one hand, as integral to the formation of a liberal political regime based on a limited suffrage, and, on the other, as critical to the outcome of the penin…
