  • A disaffected, right-wing, conflicted Italy

    Open Access•Dario Tuorto, Vittorio Mete et al.•ARTICLE•Modern Italy•2024•References: 1

You can never really get tired of Italian politics. Over the last 30 years, we have seen many turning points, the most memorable of which was undoubtedly Silvio Berlusconi's unexpected ‘descent into the field’ in 1994. Nor have we been deprived of colourful characters, such as Matteo Renzi or Matteo Salvini, who, as their careers took off, ended up burning their wings. And after many unsuccessful attempts, imagination has finally come to power (a…

  • Women candidates and mayors in Italy (1993–2021)

    Open Access•Anna Carola Freschi, Vittorio Mete•ARTICLE•Modern Italy•2024•References: 6

This article uses an original dataset to sketch a portrait of women mayoral candidates and women elected as mayors in Italy in the period 1993–2021. The analysis highlights several significant findings. Women must compensate for their political marginality by deploying other resources, such as higher levels of education. Nevertheless, women are penalised not only by the reluctance of parties to put them forward as candidates, but also by the elec…

  • Anti-Politics in Contemporary Italy

    Vittorio Mete•BOOK•Anti-Politics in Contemporary Italy•2022

This book explores the discourses, attitudes, and behaviours of professional politicians and ordinary citizens alike characterized by hostility towards the political sphere, political parties, and above all, professional politicians. It furnishes a clear, consistent depiction of the antipolitics phenomenon in general using Italy as a ‘laboratory’ where anti-politics is widespread. After an original reconstruction of the concept of anti-politics, …

  • La Lega al Sud. Il difficile cammino di un insediamento annunciato

Open Access•Luciano Brancaccio, Vittorio Mete et al.•ARTICLE•SocietàMutamentoPolitica•2021

The article illustrates the penetration strategies of Salvini’s League in Southern Italy, particularly after the 2018 general elections. The League’s strategies are closely observed in three territorial contexts: Calabria, Campania and Sicily. For each of these three regions, the article presents the choices made by the League and the ways of building a new local political class loyal to the party. The analysis shows that in all three regions the…

  • Kidnappings by the ’Ndrangheta

    Open Access•Cristina Barbieri, Vittorio Mete•ARTICLE•Modern Italy•2021

This article examines kidnappings for ransom by the ’Ndrangheta in Italy from the more measured perspective that the passage of time allows. To investigate the importance and characteristics of this phenomenon, we analyse a new database compiled from various sources. We put forward an explanation of the way that the kidnapping era ended that derives both from statistical analysis of the 654 instances surveyed and from a case study (the abduction …

  • Mafie e gioco d’azzardo

The article investigates the role of mafias in the gambling sector in Italy. Although gambling has become legal, the demand for illegal gambling services has not definitely di…

  • The electoral personalization of Italian mayors. A study of 25 years of direct election

    Open Access•Anna Carola Freschi, Vittorio Mete•ARTICLE•Italian Political Science…•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 36

This paper presents an analysis of the personalization of the vote in Italian municipal elections in the period 1993–2017. Considering the ability of mayoral candidates to attract more votes than those of the lists that support them, the paper outlines the socio-demographic and political characteristics of the candidates who receive the most personalized votes. Contrary to what one might expect, the most personalized candidates are the losing can…

  • Overcoming the ‘Ndrangheta

Open Access•Vittorio Mete, Rocco Sciarrone et al.•ARTICLE•Modern Italy•2012

The ‘Ndrangheta is one of southern Italy's three traditional mafias; with its roots in Calabria, it has a presence in other Italian regions and operates from bases abroad, including outside Europe. Until a few years into the new millennium the other two, the Sicilian Cosa Nostra and the Camorra of Campania, were much better known. Serious studies of the ‘Ndrangheta could be counted on the fingers of two hands, the few journalists who took an inte…

  • Four types of anti-politics

    Open Access•Vittorio Mete•ARTICLE•Modern Italy•2010

The word antipolitica (‘anti-politics’) is widely used in contemporary Italian political debate. The concept of ‘anti-politics’ is also frequently used by social scientists in explaining the Italian political transition that took place during the 1990s and analysing the current political situation. In spite of this wide use, sociopolitical literature does not provide a consensual definition of the term. As result, the semantic field of the concep…
