Lost and Beautiful or the (Environmental) Ethics of the Lyric Essay Film
This article contributes to a theory of the lyric essay film by bringing studies of the essay film and lyricism to bear on Pietro Marcello’s Lost and Beautiful (2015). We argue that the lyric essay film delivers its argument by leveraging the tension between words and images, narrative and counter-narrative components, and the (non)human subjectivities (i.e. the director’s, characters’ and camera’s) its text embodies and enacts. These tensions ge…
\n= \nThe guest editors of this spec…
Introduction
The title of this special issue, Cross-Cultural Articulations of Italian Ecocriticism, indicates the theoretical framework from which we move — material ecocriticism — and the direction in which we want to take it — cross-cultural exchanges — starting from an Italian viewpoint. According to this framework, matter is densely storied, yet stories are not the same for all human or nonhuman inhabitants of an ecosystem. The narrative patterns they art…
Renziscappa
This paper analyzes how the hashtag #Renziscappa was used to create a link between online and offline forms of political activism. Launched in November 2014 by the Italian collective Wu Ming, #Renziscappa aimed to encourage the reporting online of any form of offline protest against the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. The implementation of #Renziscappa by Wu Ming and their followers sought to counter mainstream representations of Renzi’s pur…
Shoot!? Describing the Hand-Cranked Camera and Filmmaking Practices from a Posthumanist Perspective
Posthumanist approaches to cinema and film studies have so far focused on the posthuman theoretical potential of film content, rather than on cinematic form and filmmaking practices. This article develops a posthumanist approach to these practices by focusing on a case study: the interaction between the hand-cranked camera and the human operator in the first decades of the twentieth century. Drawing on Karen Barad’s theory of agential realism and…
Cultural memory against institutionalised amnesia
This article studies post-war Italy’s forgetful attitude towards its Fascist past by interpreting a political measure, the Togliatti amnesty (1946), and 1950s film censorship as ‘institutionalised forms of (...) amnesia’ (Ricoeur 2004, 452). The amnesty, which erased the Fascists’ legal responsibility for war and political crimes, represented the first act of oblivion of the Republican political establishment, embodying a forgetful mindset that i…
