New Discoveries from Papyri
For nearly ten years, Peter Arzt-Grabner regularly published in this journal bibliographical dossiers reporting on new discoveries in papyrology relevant to scholars of early Christianity. I am pleased to carry forward his valuable work and to offer here a survey of papyri published from 2020, the year of his last contribution, through September 2025. The material is organized into four sections. The first presents recently published New Testamen…
Christianizing Shamelessness
To characterize the attitude of the man who approaches his friend at midnight to obtain food for his guest, Luke employs a striking term: ἀναίδεια . From the early Imperial period onward, this word increasingly came to denote the shamelessness typically associated with the Cynic philosopher—a set of scandalous and subversive behaviors that challenged established norms. Pagan, Jewish, and Christian authors were uneasy with this particular trait, t…

Demonstratio et veritas. Priestly oracles in Pseudo-Philo’s Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum
Although shrouded in mystery, the oracles of the high priest (Urim and Thummim) have often been the subject of curious interest in the literature of the Second Temple, as well as in the Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum (L.A.B.). The present research studies the mentions of this device in Pseudo-Philo’s narrative to shed new light on its configuration, role, and function. Despite the attempts made by recent scholarship to distinguish and separate the…
Artemis’ Garments and Paul’s Aprons (Acts 19
The practice of dressing the cult statue of Artemis in radiant garments was quite widespread in antiquity. During religious festivals, such garments were carried in procession and displayed for the benefit of spectators. By virtue of their contact with the statue, such robes were considered to be bearers of the power of the deity itself. This may provide an intriguing parallel to the strange scene wherein Paul’s thaumaturgical activity in Ephesus…
Greedy Heirs
The brief account of an inheritance dispute between brothers in Luke 12,13–15 marks a turning point in the broader discourse of Luke 12,1–34 and also serves as an introduction to the subsequent parable of the rich fool (12,16–21). The purpose of this study is threefold. First, a careful analysis of the scene shows how Luke employs the legal institution of the arbitratum to shape the episode. Second, nine petitions from Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt c…

Between censure and celebration
The large triangular building sandwiched betweenthe Castel Sant’Angelo and the Palazzo di Giustizia in Rome is the Casa Madre dei Mutilati, designed by Marcello Piacentini and built in two phases between 1926 and 1928, and from 1936 to 1939. Its exterior blends in well with its surroundings, suggesting it no longer conjures memories of the Fascist regime, but inside, its decorative plan reveals a series of artworks with polyvalent meanings that w…
Rome remembers fascism
One day in the early 2000s, while driving along Rome’s Via Ardeatina I saw a street sign: Largo Martiri delle Fosse Ardeatine. It piqued my curiosity so I parked the car to find out more about these martyrs and these fosse? About an hour later I was back in my car weeping. I had gone to an underworld and back again, through an idyllic park, that housed a site of shootings, burials, exhumations and re-burials. At the Monument to the Fosse Ardeatin…
Aristotle Kallis, The Third Rome, 1922–1943
Book review of Aristotle Kallis, "The Third Rome, 1922–1943: the Making of the Fascist Capital," Palgrave-Macmillan, Basingstoke, 2014
Mussolini and the idealisation of Empire
The Augustan Exhibition of Romanità , held in Rome's Palazzo delle Esposizioni between 1937 and 1938, exemplifies the aestheticisation, ritualisation and sacralisation of politics during the Fascist era in Italy. This article conducts a multi-layered spatial analysis of the exhibition that considers space as passively experienced, as an agent to re-map memory, as a mediator between intention and reception and as having both physical and mental ch…
