  • Improved Target-Specific Stance Detection on Social Media Platforms by Delving Into Conversation Threads

Open Access•Yupeng Li, Haorui He et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Computational…•2023

Target-specific stance detection on social media, which aims at classifying a textual data instance such as a post or a comment into a stance class of a target issue, is an emerging opinion mining paradigm of importance. An example application would be to overcome vaccine hesitancy in combating the coronavirus pandemic. Existing stance detection strategies rely merely on the individual instances which cannot always capture the expressed stance of…

  • Financial development, carbon dioxide emissions, and sustainable development

    Open Access•Kai Dong, Shaonan Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Development•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 10

China currently is the world's largest energy consumer and carbon dioxide emitter. How to effectively control carbon dioxide emissions and promote sustainable development is indispensable for achieving the “double carbon” goal, promoting comprehensive economic transformation and upgrading, and contributing to high‐quality economic development. There is no doubt that a large amount of financial resources need to be invested in the process of encou…

  • Unemployment Insurance benefit reduction and food hardship

Open Access•Chandra Dhakal, Yufeng Luo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•2023•References: 1

We leverage the sharp drop in unemployment insurance (UI) benefits following the expiration of the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program to estimate the consumption smoothing effect of UI. The $600/week decline in supplemental UI benefits is estimated to reduce total food spending by 9.7% and the odds of having food sufficiency by 6.0%. The estimate for food spending translates to a marginal propensity to spend on food out of UI bene…

  • Food spending in the United States during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Chandra Dhakal, Binod Acharya et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

The COVID-19 pandemic brought about a significant increase in the unemployment rate and a decline in consumer income. At the same time, the public health responses to the pandemic, such as lockdowns and business closures, disrupted the food supply chain. These pandemic-driven changes could lead to a shift in food spending behaviors and potentially exacerbate the food insecurity situation. Leveraging the nationally representative dataset from the …

  • The Dynamic Relationship among Bank Credit, House Prices and Carbon Dioxide Emissions in China

Open Access•Guangyang Chen, Kai Dong et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

This paper explores the dynamic relationship among bank credit, house prices and carbon dioxide emissions in China by systematically analyzing related data from January 2000 to December 2019 with the help of the time-varying parameter vector autoregression with stochastic volatility (TVP-SV-VAR) model and the Bayesian DCC-GARCH model. Empirical results show the expansion of bank credit significantly drives up house prices and increases carbon dio…
