  • New data on the sedimentary processes and timing of the initial inundation of Lower Khuzestan (SW Iran) by the Persian Gulf

    Open Access•Frieda Bogemans, M Boudin et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•References: 6

The early- and mid-Holocene deposits of the Lower Khuzestan plain at the north-eastern margin of the Persian Gulf have been investigated by means of facies analysis of sediment successions of undisturbed cores. Organic material and molluscs have been selected for dating by radiocarbon whereby possible contamination by hard-water effect is discussed. The results suggest that the Holocene transgression in Mesopotamia may have taken place later than…

  • Environmental Roots of the Late Bronze Age Crisis

Open Access•David Kaniewski, Elise Van Campo et al.•ARTICLE•PLoS ONE•2013

The Late Bronze Age world of the Eastern Mediterranean, a rich linkage of Aegean, Egyptian, Syro-Palestinian, and Hittite civilizations, collapsed famously 3200 years ago and has remained one of the mysteries of the ancient world since the event's retrieval began in the late 19(th) century AD/CE. Iconic Egyptian bas-reliefs and graphic hieroglyphic and cuneiform texts portray the proximate cause of the collapse as the invasions of the "Peoples-of…

  • Radiocarbon-dated sediment sequences from the Belgian coastal plain

    Open Access•Cécile Baeteman•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2008•Cited by: 8•References: 5

The late-Holocene deposits of the coastal lowlands bordering the southern North Sea were formed by a renewed expansion of the tidal environment replacing freshwater peats. The sea-level history during the last 2500 years inferred from the post-peat deposits, containing little to no datable organic material, is characterized by two conflicting schools of thought. The first one supports a smooth sea-level curve. The second approach underpins fluctu…

  • Sequence mapping of Holocene coastal lowlands

  • C Dating and the Reconstruction of the Sedimentary Environment and Occupational History of Saltés (Atlantic coast, Southern Spain)

  • C Dating and the Reconstruction of the Sedimentary Environment and Occupational History of Saltés (Atlantic coast, Southern Spain)

Mark Van Strydonck, Anton Ervynck et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2000•References: 2

The taphonomy and chronological context of shell deposits excavated at the location of the deserted late medieval harbour town of Saltés (Atlantic Coast, Spain) were investigated. An interpretation of the depositional history of the deposits was made on the basis of radiocarbon dating and points to a multiple origin of the assemblages. Although the shell deposits are much older than the medieval site, the investigation showed that they still had …

  • Tidal crevasse splays as the cause of rapid changes in the rate of aggradation in the Holocene tidal deposits of the Belgian Coastal Plain

    Open Access•Cécile Baeteman, Dirk J Beets et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•1999
