Boreal blazes
The past decade includes some of the most extensive boreal forest fires in the historical record. Warming temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, the desiccation of thick organic soil layers, and increased ignition from lightning all contribute to a combustive combination. Smoke aerosols travel thousands of kilometers, before blanketing the surfaces on which they fall, such as the Juneau Icefield. However, many aerosols found in smoke plum…

Fire and human record at Lake Victoria, East Africa, during the Early Iron Age
Organic molecular markers determined in a sediment core (V95-1A-1P) from Lake Victoria (East Africa) were used to reconstruct the history of human impact and regional fire activity during the Early Iron Age (~2400 to ~1100 yr BP). Fire history was reconstructed using levoglucosan and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as markers for biomass burning that demonstrate two distinct fire periods peaking at 1450–1700 and 1850–2050 cal. yr BP. A pa…
The first continuous Late Glacial – Holocene peat bog multi-proxy record from the Dolomites (NE Italian Alps)
Reconstruction of past isotope gradients using modern and fossil European land-snail shell δ18O
Paleoclimatic implications of the spatial patterns of modern and LGM European land-snail shell δ 18 O
The oxygen isotopic composition of land-snail shells may provide insight into the source region and trajectory of precipitation. Last glacial maximum (LGM) gastropod shells were sampled from loess from Belgium to Serbia and modern land-snail shells both record δ 18 O values between 0‰ and − 5‰. There are significant differences in mean fossil shell δ 18 O between sites but not among genera at a single location. Therefore, we group δ 18 O values f…
