The emerging importance of ice-marginal lakes across Greenland
Ice-marginal lakes influence the dynamic behaviour of glaciers and ice sheets, impacting the rate at which they lose mass. In Greenland, accelerated ice loss over recent decades had led to an increase in the number of lakes bordering the ice sheet margin. This landscape evolution has sparked a growing field of research focused on quantitatively understanding the interactions between lakes and glaciers, so that ice-marginal lakes can be accounted …
Geomorphology of Stansbury Peninsula, Nelson Island, Antarctic Peninsula
The proglacial landscapes of Antarctica offer critical insights into past and ongoing deglaciation processes and the impacts of climate change. This study presents the first geomorphological map of the proglacial part of Stansbury Peninsula (Rip Point) and Cariz Cabo Cape in the northern part of Nelson Island. We identify and characterise a variety of glacial, proglacial, paraglacial, and periglacial landforms using high-resolution drone imagery,…
Glacier thinning, recession and advance, and the associated evolution of a glacial lake between 1966 and 2021 at Austerdalsbreen , western Norway
The Jostedalsbreen is the largest ice cap in Norway and mainland Europe. Rapid retreat of many of its outlet glaciers since the 2000s has led to the formation of several glacial lakes. Processes causing the formation and expansion of glacial lakes and their interaction with a glacier and terminal moraine have not been widely addressed yet. In this study, we investigate the degradation of the front of the southeast‐facing outlet glacier Austerdals…
Geomorphology of Ulu Peninsula, James Ross Island, Antarctica
This study presents a 1:25,000 geomorphological map of the northern sector of Ulu Peninsula, James Ross Island, Antarctic Peninsula. The map covers an area of c. 250 km 2 , and documents the landforms and surficial sediments of one of the largest ice-free areas in Antarctica, based on remote sensing and field-based mapping. The large-scale landscape features are determined by the underlying Cretaceous sedimentary and Neogene volcanic geology, whi…
Exploring the Value of Professional Body Accreditation for Masters Programmes
Masters programmes face a range of pressures including the drive for increased numbers, for widening participation and for increasingly vocational approaches. Maintaining quality and consistency of knowledge and skill sets between programmes is becoming difficult. This paper critically appraises the value of accreditation of a UK Masters programme by a professional body; the Chartered Institution of Water and Environment Management (CIWEM). Accre…
