  • A Roman Vivarium for Oysters in the Northern Lagoon of Venice (Lio Piccolo, Cavallino-Treporti, Italy)

Carlo Beltrame, Elisa Costa et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2026

The underwater excavation carried out at Lio Piccolo, in the Canale Rigà (lagoon of Venice), permitted the investigation and documentation, by digital photogrammetry, of a Roman Period site discovered by the amateur archaeologist E. Canal in murky waters. This is a vivarium (a pool) for oysters, made of bricks and wood and equipped with two wooden sluice gates, which was quickly silted over, covering hundreds of molluscs. This unique finding, wit…

  • Geophysical Prospecting for the Detection of Buried and Shallow Submerged Archaeological Sites of Roman Period in the Lagoon of Venice (Italy)

    Open Access•Carlo Beltrame, Elisa Costa et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2025•References: 7

We present a study that combines several marine geophysical techniques to detect and map archaeological sites from the Roman period in the shallow waters of the Venice Lagoon, Italy. We employed marine electrical resistivity tomography (M‐ERT), a drone‐based unmanned surface vehicle (USV) multibeam sonar, and subbottom profiler technology to overcome the challenges posed by low visibility in the inland waters. These methods were particularly effe…

  • Clayey materials for traditional bricks production in North-Eastern Italy through a combined compositional study

    Open Access•Elena Mercedes Pérez-Monserrat, Laura Crespo-López et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The compositional study of two main types of clayey materials outcropping nearby Padua (Veneto region, north-eastern Italy) and bricks used in historical constructions of the city is here addressed. Mineralogically, the clayey materials are illitic-chloritc clays, both non-carbonatic and carbonatic/highly-carbonatic clays, that chemically correspond to clays with important contents of silica and/or iron and of calcium and/or magnesium, respective…

  • Roman ‘Well-cisterns’, Navigational Routes, and Landscape Modifications in the Venice Lagoon and Northeastern Adriatic

Carlo Beltrame, Stefano Medas et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Underwater investigations in the lagoon of Venice have revealed a partially preserved structure interpreted as a Roman ‘well-cistern’. It is indeed very similar to another, better-preserved building excavated in the same area. The analysis of the mortar, the evaluation of the depth of the structure base in relation to relative sea level, and the absence of foundation poles in the underlying soft lagoon mud support such interpretation. A compariso…

  • The Fifth-Century AD Riverine Barge of Santa Maria in Padovetere (Ferrara, Italy)

Carlo Beltrame, Paolo Mozzi et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 16

This paper presents the results of a multidisciplinary investigation of the wreck of a riverine flat-bottom sewn barge dated to the fifth century AD. The wreck was recovered west of the city of Comacchio (Ferrara, North Italy), near the sixth century church Santa Maria in Padovetere (SMP). It was found in the silty sediments filling a paleo channel of the Po River and is one of the very few well-preserved inland watercrafts from the Roman period …

  • Pre-Alpine and Alpine deformation at San Pellegrino pass (Dolomites, Italy)

Open Access•Tiziano Abbà, Anna Breda et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2018

In this work, we present the geological map of the San Pellegrino pass, inserted in the spectacular scenario of the Dolomiti region (Southern Alps, Italy), at a scale of 1:10.000 and accompanied by geological cross-sections. The detailed distinction of lithological thin units allowed to achieve a consistent interpretation of the local structural setting by drawing brittle and ductile Alpine tectonic deformations. The differential deformation and …

  • Water matters. Geoarchaeology of the city of Adria and palaeohydrographic variations (Po Delta, Northern Italy)

Open Access•Elisa Corrò, Paolo Mozzi•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2017

  • The modeling of archaeological and geomorphic surfaces in a multistratified urban site in Padua, Italy

Open Access•Paolo Mozzi, Francesco Ferrarese et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2017•Cited by: 6•References: 2

Multistratified archaeological sites are important archives of past human activities, recording the superposition of anthropogenic deposits over centuries and millennia. We attempted the reconstruction of buried geomorphic and archaeological surfaces in the 1.55 km 2 , 7 m thick, multistratified urban site of Padua in northern Italy, through the spatial interpolation of 117 elevation points relative to unique archaeological features. Key data wer…

  • The Roman City of Altinum, Venice Lagoon, from Remote Sensing and Geophysical Prospection

    Open Access•Paolo Mozzi, Alessandro Fontana et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2015•Cited by: 13•References: 10

Geophysical prospection on 14 ha integrates the processing and interpretation of vertical multispectral and oblique aerial images for uncovering the archaeology of the Roman city of Altinum. This Iron Age and Roman harbour city was completely abandoned in the early Middle Ages, when people moved to nearby lagoon islands, and so the site is particularly fit for the application of non‐invasive techniques. Primary aims of the research were to test t…

  • Bronze Age paleohydrography of the southern Venetian Plain

Open Access•Silvia Piovan, Paolo Mozzi et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2009•Cited by: 5•References: 2

The Bronze Age paleohydrography of the distal Adige and Po alluvial plain (northeastern Italy) is notable for its relations with protohistoric human activities in this area. This paper regards the stratigraphy and petrography of the Saline–Cona alluvial ridge, upon which the Saline, Sarzano, and Cantarana Bronze Age sites lie, and the petrography of Fratta alluvial ridge, upon which the Frattesina complex (Bronze–Iron Age) lies. Sand analyses ind…

  • Middle Terrace Deposits of the Tagus River in Alpiarça, Portugal, in Relation to Early Human Occupation

Open Access•Paolo Mozzi, Maria Teresa Azevedo et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2000

The stratigraphy and sedimentology of the Q3 middle terrace alluvial sequence in the lower Tagus river valley, Portugal, were studied near the village of Alpiarça, approximately 40 km upstream from the estuarine area. Two main stratigraphic units were recognized, separated by an important uncomformity. The Lower Gravels unit (LG) consists of intercalations of medium to coarse gravel deposits, mainly quartzitic, with coarse sandy matrix, organized…
