  • Quaternary eolian dunes in the Savannah River Valley, Jasper County, South Carolina, USA

    Open Access•Christopher S Swezey, Arthur P Schultz et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2013

Sand hills in the Savannah River valley in Jasper County (South Carolina, USA) are interpreted as the remnants of parabolic eolian dunes composed of sand derived from the Savannah River and stabilized by vegetation under prevailing climate conditions. Optically stimulated luminescence ages reveal that most of the dunes were active ca. 40 to 19 ka ago, coincident with the last glacial maximum (LGM) through early deglaciation. Modern surface winds …

  • Native Americans, regional drought and tree island evolution in the Florida Everglades

    Open Access•Christopher E Bernhardt, Christopher Bernhardt•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 8

This study uses palynologic data to determine the effects of regional climate variability and human activity on the formation and development of tree islands during the last ~4000 years. Although prolonged periods of aridity have been invoked as one mechanism for their formation, Native American land use has also been hypothesized as a driver of tree island development. Using pollen assemblages from head and near tail sediments collected on two t…

  • Development and application of a pollen-based paleohydrologic reconstruction from the Lower Roanoke River Basin, North Carolina, USA

    Open Access•Debra A Willard, Debra Willard et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 6

We used pollen assemblages to reconstruct late-Holocene paleohydrologic patterns in floodplain deposits from the lower Roanoke River basin (North Carolina, southeastern USA). Using 120 surface samples from 38 transects, we documented statistical relationships between pollen assemblages, vegetation, and landforms. Backswamp pollen assemblages (long hydroperiods) are dominated by Nyssa (tupelo) and Taxodium (cypress) and have high pollen concentrat…
