  • Pollen Evidence in Exploring Settlement Dynamics, Land Use, and Subsistence Strategies in the Åland Islands through Multiproxy Analyses from the Lake Dalkarby Träsk Sediment Record

Open Access•Teija Alenius, Kristin Ilves et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2024

In this study, which presents pollen, charcoal, and ‘soot’-particle records from a lacustrine sediment core, the development of the cultural landscape around Lake Dalkarby träsk on the Åland Islands in Finland is scrutinised and discussed within a broad temporal setting in order to clarify the long-term interplay between the environment and human activities in this part of the archipelago. Special emphasis is given to the transition period from t…

  • Varve Distribution Reveals Spatiotemporal Hypolimnetic Hypoxia Oscillations During the Past 200 Years in Lake Lehmilampi, Eastern Finland

Open Access•Sarianna Salminen, Saija Saarni et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2019

We investigated 34 sediment cores to reconstruct spatiotemporal variations in hypolimnetic hypoxia for the past 200 years in Lehmilampi, a small lake in Eastern Finland. As hypoxia is essential for varve preservation, spatiotemporal changes in varve distribution were used as an indicator for hypolimnetic hypoxia oscillations. The hypoxic water volume was used as a variable reflecting hypolimnetic hypoxia and determined for each year by estimating…

  • Between the North Atlantic Oscillation and the Siberian High

    Open Access•Saija Saarni, Timo Saarinen et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 21

Clastic-organic varved sediments from the boreal Lake Kalliojärvi, Central Finland, record changes in snow accumulation for more than 4000 years. The varve record was reconstructed using digital image analysis from 4132 varve yr BP to present with 2.2% counting error and is supported by paleomagnetic data. Two laminae are identified in a typical varve structure: (1) the minerogenic lamina, which accumulates during spring as a result of catchment …

  • Effects of land use and climate change on erosion intensity and sediment geochemistry at Lake Lehmilampi, Finland

    Open Access•Anna Augustsson, Marie‐José Gaillard et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 13

This paper aims to evaluate the possible relationships between erosion intensity and changes in climate and land use during the past 5.5 cal. k years at Lake Lehmilampi, eastern Finland. In this study we compare a detailed geochemical sediment record with (1) forest and land use history inferred from the first pollen and charcoal records from Lake Lehmilampi, and (2) existing archaeological surveys and independent proxy-records of climate change …

  • Documentation of the physical properties of annually laminated (varved) sediments at a sub-annual to decadal resolution for environmental interpretation

Open Access•Mia Tiljander, Antti Ojala et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2002

  • Palaeosecular variation of the Earth's magnetic field during the last 10000 years based on the annually laminated sediment of Lake Nautäjarvi, central Finland

    Open Access•Antti E K Ojala, Timo Saarinen•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2002•Cited by: 4•References: 6

A palaeomagnetic study of the Lake Nautajärvi sediment sequence in central Finland demonstrates that varved lake sediments can provideregionally applicable secular variations curves for Holocene stratigraphic correlation and age control. Based on x-ray radiography and digital image analysis techniques we constructed an inherent and continuous varve chronology for the Lake Nautajärvi varve sequence, which covers nearly 10000 years with an estimate…

  • A Cross-Cultural Study on Escalation of Commitment Behavior in Software Projects1

Mark Keil, Barney Tan et al.•ARTICLE•MIS Quarterly•2000

One of the most challenging decisions that a manager must confront is whether to continue or abandon a troubled project. Published studies suggest that failing software projects are often allowed to continue for too long before appropriate management action is taken to discontinue or redirect the efforts. The level of sunk cost associated with such projects has been offered as one explanation for this escalation of commitment behavior. What prior…
