Rainfall variability over the Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra river basins
Twentieth-century sea ice variability in the Weddell Sea and its effect on moisture transport
High-resolution study of deuterium excess (d-excess), sea salt sodium (ss-Na + ), and methane sulfonic acid (MSA) in an ice core from coastal Dronning Maud Land (cDML), East Antarctica, revealed the history of moisture transport and sea ice extent (SIE) during the last century. Backward wind trajectories show that air parcels were mainly derived from the Weddell Sea region. The d-excess profile shows a dramatic shift from an average value of 8‰ d…
Continental-scale temperature variability during the past two millennia
Is cloud seeding in coastal Antarctica linked to bromine and nitrate variability in snow
Considering the significance of methanesulfonate (MSA) in the sulfur cycle and global climate, we analyzed MSA and other ionic species in snow from the coastal Larsemann Hills, East Antarctica. MSA concentrations recorded were high (0.58 ± 0.7 μM) with ice-cap regions showing significantly higher concentrations (df = 10, p < 0.001) than ice-free regions. High nutrient concentration in ice-cap snow appears to have favored algal growth (7.6 × 102 c…
Nitrate records of a shallow ice core from East Antarctica
High-resolution records of nitrate (NO 3 − ), oxygen isotope (δ 18 O) and non-sea salt sulphate (nssSO 4 2− ) were studied using an ice core collected from central Dronning Maud Land in East Antarctica to identify the influence of environmental variability on accumulation of NO 3 − over the past 450 years. The results confirmed that multiple processes were responsible for the production and preservation of NO 3 − in Antarctic ice. Correlation bet…
