  • Recent avulsion history of Sefidrud, south west of the Caspian Sea

    Open Access•Safiyeh Haghani, Suzanne A G Leroy•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2020

The Sefidrud, a river flowing into south west Caspian Sea, is prone to avulsion. Previous studies of the river delta support the idea that several major avulsions have occurred during the past few thousand years. During the most recent major avulsion, a 23 km shift occurred along the coast. However, in literature the timing of the event is subject to uncertainty and therefore the causes of the avulsion remain unclear. Lying in the most populated …

  • Metalworking Evidence from a Late Antique Context in the Forum of Grumentum

Open Access•Giulia Bison, Lara Pozzan et al.•ARTICLE•STAR Science & Technology of…•2017

This paper is a preliminary report on metallurgical activity detected in the Forum of the ancient city of Grumentum ( Basilicata, Italy). In the Late antique period, an area next to one of the most important temples of the square was turned into a metalworking structure, which has yielded a set of hearths, metallurgical remains, and some tools. The results of archaeometrical investigation on the debris are reported and discussed, together with a …

  • Differential impact of long-shore currents on coastal geomorphology development in the context of rapid sea level changes

    Open Access•Safiyeh Haghani, Suzanne A G Leroy•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2016

In the face of global rise in sea level, understanding the response of the shoreline to sea level rise is an important key for coastal management. The rapid sea level fluctuations taking place in the Caspian Sea provide a live model for studying shoreline response to sea level rise. Coastal lagoon deposits provide an ideal archive to study sea level fluctuation. In this study, two lagoons on both sides of the Old Sefidrud River (south coast of th…

  • Rapid evolution of coastal lagoons in response to human interference under rapid sea level change

    Open Access•Safiyeh Haghani, Suzanne A G Leroy et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2016

This paper examines the interdependence of different factors in the evolution of a coastal lagoon system of the Sefidrud Delta (SW Caspian Sea) based on multi-proxy sedimentary and palaeoecological analyses and remotely sensed data. According to historical aerial photographs and multiple strands of chronology, these coastal lagoons formed between 1955 and 1964, when the sea-level was relatively stable. However, formation of barrier-lagoon systems…

  • An early ‘Little Ice Age’ brackish water invasion along the south coast of the Caspian Sea (sediment of Langarud wetland) and its wider impacts on environment and people

    Open Access•Safiyeh Haghani, Suzanne A G Leroy et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•References: 5

Caspian Sea level has undergone significant changes through time with major impacts not only on the surrounding coasts but also on offshore. This study reports a brackish water invasion on the southern coast of the Caspian Sea constructed from a multi-proxy analysis of sediment retrieved from the Langarud wetland. The ground surface level of wetland is >6 m higher than the current Caspian Sea level (at −27.41 m in 2014) and located >11 km far fro…
