  • Prehistoric Stone Disks from Entrances and Cemeteries of North-Eastern Adriatic Hillforts

    Open Access•F Bernardini, G Vinci et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2022

The paper presents a group of four, approximately 0.5m large, stone disks from entrances or cemeteries of two protohistoric hillforts of north-eastern Adriatic. The disks, having a sparse chronology with the exception of one dated to the Middle Bronze Age, show flat and plain surfaces or covered with sub-circular depressions. One disk shows two larger cup-marks at the centre of both faces. They are interpreted as ritual artefacts based on the ass…

  • Geo-archaeology of the Grozzana area (N–E Italy)

    Open Access•G Vinci, F Bernardini et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2019

The extensive analysis of remote-sensed data (among which ALS-derived images) and fieldwork carried out in the Trieste Karst (N–E Italy) have shed light on archaeological landscapes largely unknown until recent years. The chronological definition of this complex palimpsest was based on the collection of findings associated to the archeological evidence, shape and orientation of detected structures and stratigraphic relations among features. This …

  • Submerged speleothem in Malta indicates tectonic stability throughout the Holocene

    Open Access•Stefano Furlani, Fabrizio Antonioli et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2018•References: 5

Submerged caves represent potential archives of speleothems with continental and marine biogenic layers. In turn, these can be used to reconstruct relative sea-level changes. This study presents new data on the tectonic behaviour of the island of Malta during the Holocene. These data were obtained from a speleothem sampled, during an underwater survey, at a depth of −14.5 m, inside a recently discovered submerged cave. Since the cave was mainly f…

  • Geology of the Classical Karst Region (SW Slovenia–NE Italy)

Open Access•Bogdan Jurkovšek, Sara Biolchi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2016

The paper aims to present the geology of the western part of the Classical Karst (NW Dinarides), located at the border between Slovenia and Italy. The work is based on archive, published and new data collected by Slovenian and Italian researchers within several scientific national and Cross Border Cooperation projects. The map, produced at a scale of 1:50,000, summarizes the lithological and structural setting and is supplemented by three geologi…

  • Geomorphological identification, classification and spatial distribution of coastal landforms of Malta (Mediterranean Sea)

Open Access•Sara Biolchi, Stefano Furlani et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2016

This paper presents the outcomes of a geomorphological investigation carried out along the coasts of the island of Malta and provides a detailed classification of the Maltese coastline based on the identification and definition of specific coastal geomorphotypes. The results of field surveys, supported by air-photo interpretation, have led to the production of a coastal geomorphological map at 1:30,000 scale which outlines the processes and relat…

  • Morphoneotectonics and lithology of the eastern sector of the Gulf of Trieste (NE Italy)

Open Access•Sara Biolchi, Stefano Furlani et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2016

The paper aims to describe and map the geomorphological and lithological features of the Gulf of Trieste and its eastern coasts and to define its neotectonic behaviour by means of the analysis of the morphoneotectonic evidence. The final map, produced at a scale of 1:30,000, shows the outcome of field investigations carried out along the coast and the sea bottom and a detailed geomorphological classification of the coastline. Published and new da…

  • Geomorphology of the El Alamein Battlefield (Southern Front, Egypt)

Open Access•Aldino Bondesan, Stefano Furlani et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2013

This map outlines the main processes and related landforms of the stretch of the Western Desert from Deir El Munassib to El Taqa Plateau, south of El Alamein (Egypt). Freely available digital elevation data derived from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, image processing of the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer and field surveys have led to the geomorphological map at 1:40,000 scale. Landforms constitute the result…

  • Geomorphological map of the NW Coast of the Island of Malta (Mediterranean Sea)

Open Access•Stefano Devoto, Sara Biolchi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2012

This paper presents the results of geomorphological investigations carried along the north-western coast of the Island of Malta. Field surveys, accompanied by aerial photo-interpretation, have led to the production of a geomorphological map at 1:7500 scale which outlines the main processes and related landforms. The latter are the results of the complex interplay of structural, gravitational, coastal and karst processes. Particular attention was …
