Evolution of the Ofanto River delta from the ‘Little Ice Age’ to modern times
We reconstruct the evolution of the Ofanto River delta from the 17th century to the present using historical maps (1600–1850), official IGM topographic maps (1850–1980) and recent aerial photographs (2015), and we compare long-term morphological changes with the evolution of the delta of the Volturno River during the same time period. The aim of this study is to define the role of climatic (flood frequency, synoptic pressure patterns) and anthrop…
The 5.5–4.5 kyr climatic transition as recorded by the sedimentation pattern of coastal deposits of the Apulia region, southern Italy
Coastal marine Holocene deposits of the Apulia region, considered as indicators of palaeoclimatic conditions, were studied. Our data show that (1) up to c. 5500 cal. yr BP, a phase of accumulation of flint pebbles from the Gargano headland occurred at the Riviera sud di Manfredonia (Adriatic coast); their transport from the Gargano headland (north of the study site) is incompatible with the current northward littoral drift and is best explained b…
The marine and alluvial terraces of Tavoliere di Puglia plain(southern Italy)
This manuscript outlines the different sedimentary deposits that characterise the Tavoliere di Puglia plain (the second largest Italian plain). The plain is largely covered by Quaternary terrace deposits that unconformably lie on older deposits, most commonly the argille subappennine unit. The outcropping units have been divided into categories of descending rank: the first subdivision is made on the basis of geological domain; within each domain …
Two middle Pleistocene warm stages in the terrace deposits of the Apulia region (southern Italy)
A Multidisciplinary Approach to Reveal and Interpret ‘Missing’ Archaeological Features at the Masseria Pantano Site in Apulia (Southern Italy)
A non‐invasive investigation, integrating aerial photography and high‐resolution magnetic survey, was carried out at the Masseria Pantano site (Apulia, Southern Italy) to obtain a more detailed reconstruction of an extensive ancient settlement, which revealed different phases of human frequentation. The results of the ground‐based survey were also used to guide some archaeological excavations, which brought to light, mainly, parts of Medieval wal…
Climate changes and human–environment interactions in the Apulia region of southeastern Italy during the Neolithic period
The objective of our research was to define the main human–environment interactions during the Neolithic period (6500–3700 bc) in the Apulia region of southeastern Italy based on available published and unpublished data. Knowledge of these interactions is crucial to understanding the cultural and social dynamics of the period, particularly concerning the earliest farmers. Using a multidisciplinary approach, paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatologi…
The palaeoenvironmental study of the Alimini Piccolo lake enables a reconstruction of Holocene sea-level changes in southeast Italy
Based on multiproxy investigations of a 250 cm long sediment core (ALI1), a reconstruction of palaeoenvironmental dynamics for the Alimini Piccolo lake (south Adriatic coast of Apulia, Italy), is proposed. Our results indicate that shortly before 5500 cal. yr BP a marsh environment established. From 5400 cal. BP the marsh progressively became a lagoon and did not change until 3320 cal. BP, when Alimini Piccolo evolved into a shallow, sheltered, f…
Holocene evolution and sea-level changes in the Battaglia basin area (eastern Gargano coast, Apulia, Italy)
Climatic characteristics of middle-southern Apulia (southern Italy)
Please click here to download the map associated with this article. The purpose of this work is to make a climatic map in order to show several variables concerning climate type in a Mediterranean region. The study is focused on the middle and southern part of Apulia region, southern Italy, an area of approximately 12,170 km2 between 39°45′ and 41°30′ N and 15°40′ and 18°40′ E. The map uses mean annual temperature as a background for the number o…
