  • Unravelling 6000 years of interplay among environmental changes, anthropogenic activities, and Vesuvius eruptions in the upper Sarno Plain (Campania, Italy)

Open Access•Elda Russo Ermolli, Halinka Di Lorenzo et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2024

Pollen analysis was carried out on the infilling succession of the Fossa San Vito sinkhole, at the NE foothills of the Sarno Plain (Italy). Four 14 C dates and six tephra layers constrain the pollen sequence between ca. 6000 and 500 cal yr BP. A forested environment, with a few signs of human activities, characterizes the pre-protohistoric period (ca. 6000–2750 yr BP). Stability of the arboreal pollen grains to non-arboreal pollen grains (AP/NAP)…

  • Geomorphology of Naples and the Campi Flegrei

    Open Access•Alessandra Ascione, Pietro P C Aucelli et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2021

Naples and its surroundings are a very young landscape, originated from 40 ka in response to strong and explosive volcanic processes, which created the Campi Flegrei, one of the largest volcanic fields of the world. Despite the repeated and continuous volcanic activity, this territory was selected for human settlements since Neolithic times and hosted some of the most important Greek and Roman towns in the Mediterranean area (e.g., Cuma, Partheno…

  • Post flash flood survey

Open Access•Antonio Santos, Nicoletta Santangelo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2017

In this paper, a 1:5000 map of the geomorphic consequences of the 14th–15th October 2015 flash flood is presented. The most severely affected area (about 13 km2) was located at the footslope of Mt. Camposauro (Southern Italy), between the municipalities of Solopaca and Paupisi. In this area high-intensity and very localized cloudbursts of short duration induced hillslope erosion and sediment delivery from the slopes to the Calore River, activatin…

  • Multiscale map analysis in alluvial fan flood-prone areas

Open Access•Vittoria Scorpio, Nicoletta Santangelo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2016

Several case studies of geomorphological mapping at various scales in order to identify areas prone to alluvial fan flooding are presented in this paper. The selected areas are located in southern Italy and are representative of a geomorphic unit (foothills consisting of coalescent alluvial fans) found throughout the southern Apennines. The medium-scale approach represents the best tool to identify areas susceptible to flooding, using detailed ge…

  • Palaeolandscapes of Southern Apennines during the late Early and the Middle Pleistocene

Open Access•Nicoletta Santangelo, Valentino Di Donato et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2012

  • Pollen and mammals from the late Early Pleistocene site of Saticula (Sant'Agata de' Goti, Benevento, Italy)

Open Access•Elda Russo Ermolli, Raffaele Sardella et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2010
