  • Ice-core records of biomass burning

    Open Access•Mauro Rubino, Antonio D’onofrio et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropocene Review•2016•References: 88

We review the approaches for estimating biomass burning from ice-cores and consider the challenges and assumptions in their application. In particular, we consider the potential of biomarker proxies for biomass burning, hitherto not widely applied to glacial ice archives. We also review the available records of biomass burning in ice-cores and consider how variations in fire regimes have been related to atmospheric and land-use changes. Finally, …

  • Holocene changes in marine productivity and terrestrial organic carbon inputs into an Icelandic fjord

    Open Access•Heiko Moossen, Richard Abell et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•References: 13

This study examines the dynamics of organic carbon contributions from different sources to the sediments of a ~39 m core from Ísafjarðardjúp Fjord, Northwest Iceland, throughout the Holocene. Furthermore, it shows that the variability of terrestrial organic carbon (OC terr ) and marine organic carbon (OC mar ) is linked to palaeoclimatic change throughout the Holocene. glycerol-dialkyl-glycerol-tetraether (GDGT), alkenone, n-alkane, total OC and …

  • High-resolution alkenone sea surface temperature variability on the North Icelandic Shelf

    Open Access•James Bendle, James A P Bendle et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Cited by: 5•References: 17

The palaeoceanography of the northern Icelandic Shelf for the Holocene period was reconstructed from alkenone indices measured in core JR51-GC35. This contains a continuous record of Holocene sedimentation spanning 0 10.2 cal. kyr BP with a resolution of ~ 20 yr/cm. We have identified a general Holocene cooling trend that has superimposed millennial-scale oscillations of >2°C. Their timing is in close agreement with the timing of glacier advances…
