  • Geomorphotectonic approach to geology of the Viñales National Park, Cuba

    Open Access•J L Goy, J L Corvea et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2026

The geological substratum of Viñales National Park is crossed by fractures and over-thrusts. It includes siliciclastic (Jurassic San Cayetano Formation), carbonate (Late Jurassic to Early Eocene Jagua, Guasasa, Pons and Ancón Formations) and olistostrome (Early-Middle Eocene Manacas Formation) rocks, covered by Quaternary deposits. Cartographic methodology includes Fundamental maps (geologic formations, Quaternary, tectonics and geomorphology) an…

  • Geomorphological evolution and mapping of the littoral of Asturias and Cantabria (Northern Spain) in the area of El Pindal Cave

Open Access•José Luis Goy Goy, José Luis Goy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2023

Along the northern littoral of the Iberian Peninsula, from Cuerres (Asturias) to Oyambre (Cantabria) there are caves, such as El Pindal (World Heritage List). Two geomorphologic maps have been prepared: a general scaled 1:25000, and a detail one of the cave, with erosional and depositional landforms geomorphologic units. A relative Quaternary chronology for the depositional landforms, uses colour spots. Marine morphologies suitable for determinin…

  • Geomorphology of the mouth of the Arosa estuary (Coruña-Pontevedra, Spain)

    Open Access•Antonio Miguel Martínez-Graña, L Arias et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2017

This paper presents a geomorphological analysis of the littoral zone of the Arosa-Pontevedra estuary mouth and identifies geomorphological units and categorizes them into morphogenetic systems. The different morphogenetic systems are used to establish a comprehensive evolutionary analysis, contrasting the depositional systems found in the continental littoral zone with the marine erosional systems (‘rasas’). The compiled cartography groups the ge…

  • Dominant soil map in ‘Las Batuecas-Sierra De Francia’ and ‘Quilamas’ nature parks (Central System, Salamanca, Spain)

Open Access•Antonio Miguel Martínez-Graña, José Luis Goy Goy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2015

To correctly and rationally plan human activities in fragile conservation areas, an exhaustive study of the soil-forming factors (climate, lithology, geomorphology, topography, hydrology and vegetation) including the soil relationships, should be conducted. We analysed the geospatial distributions of different soil types in the ‘Las Batuecas – Sierra de Francia’ and ‘Quilamas’ natural areas using soil sampling and laboratory analyses to determine…

  • Ground movement risk in ‘Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia’ and ‘Quilamas’ nature parks (central system, Salamanca, Spain)

Open Access•Antonio Miguel Martínez-Graña, José Luis Goy Goy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2014

Ground movements constitute active processes that modify the disposition and morphology of the earth's surface. This work establishes a cartography procedure to obtain a ground movement risk map at a 1:50,000 scale. Such a map would be useful for establishing mitigation measures for land use planning and management in natural spaces, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). A number of steps are taken to produce the map in GIS. First, a suscep…

  • Vegetation and environmental conditions in the Doñana Natural Park coastal area (SW Iberia) at the beginning of the last glacial cycle

Open Access•César Morales‐molino, José María Postigo Mijarra et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2011

Detailed reconstructions of the vegetation of Iberia during the last glacial inception are rare due to the limited number of terrestrial sites recording this period. Active retreat of El Asperillo cliff, located on the Atlantic coast of southwestern Iberia, has exposed a fossil organic level dating back to one of the early stades of the last glacial cycle. Pollen and macrofossil analyses from this site show that the Doñana area was covered mainly…

  • Natural Heritage Mapping of the Las Batuecas-Sierra De Francia and Quilamas Nature Parks (SW Salamanca, Spain)

Open Access•Antonio Miguel Martínez-Graña, José Luis Goy Goy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2011

Please click here to download the map associated with this article. Natural heritage mapping is a significant tool for the conservation of protected natural areas because it allows the manager to rationally plan for the human use of these areas. This approach incorporates the characteristics of different assets (geological, ecological, biological, scenic and cultural), the categories to which the assets belong (areas, places and things), and the …

  • Holocene aeolian phases and human settlements along the Atlantic coast of southern Spain

    Open Access•Francisco Borja Barrera, Francisco Borja et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1999•Cited by: 2•References: 2

A combined geomorphological, radiocarbon dating, archaeological and historical approach permits a refining of the age of the coastal dune systems related to estuaries in the Gulf of Cádiz. Three dune systems are distinguished in this paper. The oldest one, D1, which accumulated under prevailing WSW winds during the first millennium bc, overlays both the occupational horizons of Late Neolithic-Early Copper Age (fourth millennium bc) and the‘lithic…

  • The Plio-Pleistocene boundary in Southeast Spain

Open Access•Teresa Bardajı́, José Luis Goy Goy et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•1997

  • U-Series Dating by the Tims Technique of Land Snails from Paleosols in the Canary Islands

    Open Access•Claude Hillaire-Marcel, Claude Hillaire‐Marcel et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1995

A sequence of seven superimposed paleosols developed on eolian calcarenites and alluvium was sampled on the island of Lanzarote in order to examine the possibility of dating land snail shells by the U-series method, using a TIMS technique allowing measurement of U and Th isotopes in very small samples. In the lower six units, the fossil shells yielded D-allo/L-isoleucine (A/I) ratios of about 0.5 and apparent AMS 14 C ages ranging from 41,000 to …
