  • A time-series of evolving glacial geomorphology for Esjufjallajökull (Breiðamerkurjökull), southeast Iceland

Open Access•Amy Lally, Alastair Ruffell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2025

This paper presents four glacial geomorphology maps depicting glacier retreat and landscape evolution between September 2021 and May 2023 at Esjufjallajökull, the central flow unit of Breiðamerkurjökull, southeast Iceland. The foreland, which deglaciated between 2010 and 2023, was mapped from repeat uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) survey data. A total of 16 landform types were identified, and their spatial distribution and morphological evolution p…

  • The (mis)conception of average Quaternary conditions

    Open Access•Matteo Spagnolo, Brice R Rea et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2022

The concept of Quaternary average conditions has gained popularity over the past few decades, especially with studies of long-term landscape evolution. In this paper, we critically assess this concept by analyzing the marine isotope record (LR04 δ 18 O stack) relative to the Quaternary. This shows that the frequency and amplitude of climate glacial-interglacial cycles are not constant throughout the Quaternary, with a clear change during the Midd…

  • Geomorphology and surface geology of Mount St. Helens volcano

Open Access•Serena Gabrielli, Matteo Spagnolo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2020

Mount St. Helens is a stratovolcano of the Cascadia volcanic arc well known worldwide for its volcanic collapse and eruption in 1980, which caused considerable destruction and changed the geomorphology of the volcano and of a considerable portion of its surroundings. This paper presents a geomorphology and surface-geology map of both the wider Mount St. Helens, Washington (USA), at the 1:50,000 scale, and of its crater, at the 1:25,000 scale. The…

  • Temperatures recorded by cosmogenic noble gases since the last glacial maximum in the Maritime Alps

    Open Access•Marissa M Tremblay, David L Shuster et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2019

While proxy records have been used to reconstruct late Quaternary climate parameters throughout the European Alps, our knowledge of deglacial climate conditions in the Maritime Alps is limited. Here, we report temperatures recorded by a new and independent geochemical technique—cosmogenic noble gas paleothermometry—in the Maritime Alps since the last glacial maximum. We measured cosmogenic 3 He in quartz from boulders in nested moraines in the Ge…

  • Manual mapping of drumlins in synthetic landscapes to assess operator effectiveness

    Open Access•John K Hillier, M J Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2015

Mapped topographic features are important for understanding processes that sculpt the Earth's surface. This paper presents maps that are the primary product of an exercise that brought together 27 researchers with an interest in landform mapping wherein the efficacy and causes of variation in mapping were tested using novel synthetic DEMs containing drumlins. The variation between interpreters (e.g. mapping philosophy, experience) and across the …

  • Spatial distribution of drumlins

  • A geomorphological overview of glacial landforms on the Icelandic continental shelf

Open Access•Matteo Spagnolo, Chris Clark et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2009

Please click here to download the map associated with this article. The availability of a bathymetric database that covers about 80% of the Icelandic shelf has made it possible to produce a geomorphological map of the glacial landforms. The digital elevation model of the bathymetry was analyzed as a series of shaded relief images. Trough edges, bulging trough mouths, moraines, eskers, melt water channels, streamlined bedrock and streamlined drift…

  • The effects of late Alpine tectonics in the morphology of the Argentera Massif (Western Alps, Italy–France)

Open Access•Giovanni Musumeci, Adriano Ribolini et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2003
