Last glacial maximum and late glacial aeolian sand activity, south-central Indiana, USA
The chronology of Late Pleistocene and Holocene aeolian sand activity in midcontinent North America provides important insight into paleoenvironmental change and associated surface processes. Near the limit of Marine Isotope Stage 2 glaciation of the Huron-Erie Lobe (Laurentide Ice Sheet) in south-central Indiana, aeolian sand deposits found along the eastern margin of outwash plains in the East Fork and West Fork White River valleys provide an o…
Updated chronology for Peoria Silt (loess) accumulation in Illinois and western Indiana from radiocarbon dating of terrestrial gastropod shells
Based on calibrated radiocarbon ages of terrestrial gastropod shells (Succineidae, Discus , Stenotrema , Webbhelix ), the chronology of Peoria Silt (loess) deposition in the Central Lowlands is updated. These taxa provide reliable ages (within ~0.2 ka), based on historical shell dating, shell-organic age comparisons, and stratigraphic consistency. A compilation of 53 new and 36 published Peoria Silt shell ages (calibrated), from 12 localities, da…
Mineralogical and geochemical evidence of weathering in a middle to late Pleistocene paleosol sequence in the Driftless Area of Wisconsin
Paleosols occur in the Driftless Area of southwestern Wisconsin because this area escaped direct Pleistocene glaciation, allowing long-term loess and colluvium accumulation in selected settings. The most complete known depositional sequence at Oil City, Wisconsin, contains eight lithologic units with five paleosols, all with normal remanent magnetism (i.e., 2 /CaO, Zr/Sr, and Rb/Sr generally align with the pedological evidence of weathering. Mine…
Soil and Clay Mineralogy
Mineral matter dominates the composition of most soils. Soils may contain minerals from all major groups, but the variety of minerals in soils varies geographically as a function of the underlying bedrock and the regolith in which they have formed. As soils get older the mineral composition will increasingly reflect the climate conditions during formation and duration of soil formation. Primary minerals originate from rocks, and dominate young so…
Natural Icons and Threats
Park management in complex landscapes spanning jurisdictions is often limited by the lack of shared management priorities and a common spatial information system. Furthermore, current approaches may lead to a reductionist approach by focusing on a narrow range of park features in isolation from their landscape context. The natural icons and threats framework is proposed as a complementary approach that can provide a more holist perspective to man…
Mississippi Valley regional source of loess on the Southern Green Bay Lobe land surface, Wisconsin—Response to comments by Randall Schaetzl, page 574-583
Mississippi Valley regional source of loess on the southern Green Bay Lobe land surface, Wisconsin
Loess has been recognized on the glacial land surface of the Green Bay Lobe for over 100 yr, but no systematic explanation of the source of the loess has been advanced. Intriguingly, the loess on the Green Bay Lobe land surface is thicker than predicted by regional thinning trends from the Mississippi Valley and is geographically separated from much loess of southwest Wisconsin by a sandy region devoid of loess. Mapping based on soil survey inter…
Sources and paleoclimatic significance of Holocene Bignell Loess, central Great Plains, USA
This paper reexamines the stratigraphy, sources, and paleoclimatic significance of Holocene Bignell Loess in the central Great Plains. A broadly similar sequence of loess depositional units and paleosols was observed in thick Bignell Loess sections up to 300 km apart, suggesting that these sections record major regional changes in the balance between dust deposition and pedogenesis. New optical ages, together with previously reported radiocarbon …
Morphology and Weathering Trends of the Sangamon Soil Complex in South-Central Indiana in Relation to Paleodrainage
Three paleodrainage groups are proposed for profiles of the Farmdale–Sangamon soil complex in south-central Indiana. The groups (good, intermediate, and poor) are differentiated on the basis of matrix colors and color patterns. Genetic support for the groupings is provided by morphological trends still evident following > 100,000 yr of pedogenesis and burial by late Wisconsinan loess. Depth of carbonate leaching, solum thickness, and argillic hor…
Preservation and Recognition of Middle and Early Pleistocene Loess in the Driftless Area, Wisconsin
An exceptional stratigraphic and pedologic record of Pleistocene environmental conditions occurs at the Kieler Site in the Driftless Area of southwestern Wisconsin. Peoria, Roxana, Loveland, and pre-Loveland loesses overlie weathered bedrock residuum. The pre-Loveland unit previously has been included as part of the residuum at other Driftless Area sites. Early and middle Pleistocene loesses in the Mississippi Valley are normally absent at most l…

À partir d'une recherche exploratoire me…
