  • A synthesis of the arctic terrestrial and marine carbon cycles under pressure from a dwindling cryosphere

    Open Access•Frans-Jan W Parmentier, Frans‐Jan W Parmentier et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2017•References: 126

The current downturn of the arctic cryosphere, such as the strong loss of sea ice, melting of ice sheets and glaciers, and permafrost thaw, affects the marine and terrestrial carbon cycles in numerous interconnected ways. Nonetheless, processes in the ocean and on land have been too often considered in isolation while it has become increasingly clear that the two environments are strongly connected: Sea ice decline is one of the main causes of th…

  • North Sea Region Climate Change Assessment

Open Access•N Hölzel, T Hickler et al.•BOOK•North Sea Region Climate Change…•2016

This book offers an up-to-date review of our current understanding of climate change in the North Sea and adjacent areas, as well as its impact on ecosystems and socio-economic sectors. It provides a detailed assessment of climate change based on published scientific work compiled by independent international experts from climate-related disciplines such as oceanography, atmospheric sciences, marine and terrestrial ecology, using a regional evalu…

  • Soil carbon in the Arctic and the permafrost carbon feedback

    Open Access•J van Huissteden, A J Dolman•ARTICLE•Current Opinion in Environmental…•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 2

  • Oxygen isotope stage 3 fluvial and eolian successions in Europe compared with climate model results

    Open Access•J van Huissteden, K o van Huissteden et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2003

Fluvial and eolian successions of oxygen isotope stage 3 are compared with global (GCM) and regional climate (RCM) modeling experiments of the stage 3 and last glacial maximum climate in Europe. Differences in precipitation between stage-3 stades and interstades were minor, which is confirmed by the fluvial successions. The fluvial response to climate variation is non-uniform, and in southern Europe more pronounced than in northern Europe. The mo…

  • Periglacial fluvial systems in northwest Europe during marine isotope stages 4 and 3

    Open Access•J van Huissteden, P L GIBBARD et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2001

  • Variability of East Asian Winter Monsoon in Quaternary Climatic Extremes in North China

    Open Access•Huayu Lu, J van Huissteden et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2000

In order to examine high-frequency variations of East Asian winter monsoon in Quaternary climatic extremes, two typical loess–paleosol sequences in the Chinese Loess Plateau were investigated. Sandy layers in the loess deposits, the “Upper sand” and “Lower sand” (layers L9 and L15, respectively), which represent a high-resolution record of paleomonsoon changes, have been sampled at intervals of 5–6 cm from sections at Luochuan and Xifeng. The gra…
