  • Multi-decadal stability of water ages and tracer transport in a temperate-humid river basin

Open Access•Siyuan Wang, Markus Hrachowitz et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

The temporal dynamics of water ages provide crucial insights into hydrological processes and transport mechanisms, yet there remains a significant gap in quantifying water age variability across different temporal scales. This study utilizes a comprehensive dataset spanning 70 years of hydrological observations and tritium records (1953–2022) with a semi-distributed hydrological model with integrated tracer routing routine based on StorageAge Sel…

  • Long-term climate, vegetation and fire regime change in a managed municipal water supply area, British Columbia, Canada

    Open Access•K J Brown, KJ Brown et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2019•References: 11

Post-glacial climate, vegetation and fire history were reconstructed from a sediment record from Begbie Lake, British Columbia, Canada, located in a municipal water supply area servicing > 350,000 people. Watershed managers have identified wildfire as a threat to water supply and seek to understand how vegetation and fire have varied through time with climate. In the cold late-glacial, open Pinus woodlands, periodically disturbed by fire, transit…

  • Global impacts of the meat trade on in-stream organic river pollution

Open Access•Yingrong Wen, Gerrit Schoups et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2017

In many regions of the world, intensive livestock farming has become a significant source of organic river pollution. As the international meat trade is growing rapidly, the environmental impacts of meat production within one country can occur either domestically or internationally. The goal of this paper is to quantify the impacts of the international meat trade on global organic river pollution at multiple scales (national, regional and gridded…

  • Multi-millennial streamflow dynamics in two forested watersheds on Vancouver Island, Canada

    Open Access•Kendrick J Brown, Gerrit Schoups•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2015

Holocene streamflow was reconstructed for two rivers on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada in 500-yr intervals. The San Juan River watershed is located on the wetter western side of the island, whereas the Koksilah River watershed is positioned on the drier eastern side. Both watersheds are forested. To reconstruct streamflow, temporal changes in precipitation (estimated using a pollen-based transfer function) and evapotranspiration were …

  • A spatio-temporal reconstruction of Holocene temperature change in southern Scandinavia

    Open Access•Kendrick J Brown, Heikki Seppä et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2011•Cited by: 8•References: 14

Holocene mean July ( T Jul ) and mean January ( T Jan ) temperatures were reconstructed at Lake Trehörningen in southwest Sweden using pollen–climate calibration functions and converted into anomalies relative to modern temperatures. The anomalies were applied to 28 meteorological stations in Denmark, with each station adjusted to account for spatial variability in both T Jul and T Jan . The resulting reconstructions were merged to create composi…
