  • Hillforts of the Cheshire Ridge

Dan Garner, D M Garner et al.•BOOK•Hillforts of the Cheshire Ridge•2017

The Habitats and Hillforts of Cheshire's Sandstone Ridge Landscape Partnership Project was focussed on six of Cheshire's hillforts and their surrounding habitats and landscapes. It aimed to develop understanding of the chronology and role of the hillforts and encourage local interest and involvement in their maintenance

  • Reconstruction of late-Holocene slope and dry valley sediment dynamics in a Belgian loess environment

    Open Access•Tom Rommens, Gert Verstraeten et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Cited by: 4•References: 4

To unravel the evolution of a dry valley in the Belgian loess area soils and sediments along a slope catena were studied in detail. A 67 m long trench was opened from the upper slope to the centre of the valley bottom. The exposed soils and sediments showed evidence of severe soil erosion and other human disturbances that significantly changed the valley topography. The early-Holocene slope gradient was up to 25%, whereas now it is less than 10%.…

  • Middle-Holocene mobilization of aeolian sand in western upper Michigan and the potential relationship with climate and fire

    Open Access•Alan F Arbogast, Susan C Packman•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2004•References: 5

A forested dunefield covers the Baraga Plains in western upper Michigan. The ages of five dunes, from across the dunefield, were determined by optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), employing the single-aliquot regenerative-dose (SAR) method on quartz grains. The results indicate that sand mobilization was restricted to the middle Holocene, at around 7 ka. Four environmental variables, rapid climatic oscillations, fire, strong winds and a dry c…

  • Thermoluminescence Dating of the Middle Pleistocene Raised Beach of Sangatte (Northern France)

    Open Access•Sanda Balescu, Susan C Packman et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1992

TL dating of both quartz and potassium feldspar grains from the Pleistocene beach of Sangatte, at the southern limit of the North Sea Basin, give self-consistent ages of 200,000 ± 45,000, 205,000 ± 14,000, and 229,000 ± 18,000 years, respectively. These results allow the beach deposits to be correlated with oxygen isotope stage 7 (244,000–190,000 yr) (Martinson et al. , 1987). The existence of a fossil beach cliff line at 10 m above French O.D. d…

  • Chronological Separation of Interglacial Raised Beaches from Northwestern Europe Using Thermoluminescence

    Open Access•Sanda Balescu, Susan C Packman et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1991

Thermoluminescence (TL) age estimates have been obtained on coarse-grained detrital feldspar from Eemian beach sand (substage 5 e ), early Weichselian dune sands (substages 5 d and 5 b ), and pre-Eemian beach sand. The past radiation dose is obtained using the additive dose method. Even for the oldest samples, which date to 300,000 yr B.P. by other methods, the TL signal is not in saturation and can be doubled by the addition of laboratory radiat…
