  • A comparison of late-Holocene hydrologic variability in California

    Open Access•Steve P Lund, Larry Benson et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2022•References: 4

This study compares the paleohydrologic variability in two California regions over the last 2000 years – Sierra Nevada region and southern California region. Both regions show significant and reproducible proxy evidence for multi-decadal wet/dry intervals that are synchronous between the two regions. The overall durations of individual cycles (wet-wet or dry-dry) average ~130 years, but the cycles are closer to 90–100 year duration for the last 5…

  • Late-Holocene paleomagnetic secular variation records from Lake Turkana, East Equatorial Africa

    Open Access•Steve P Lund, Ellen Platzman et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2022•References: 2

We have carried out a paleomagnetic study of three piston cores collected from Lake Turkana. The goal is to recover a Holocene paleomagnetic secular variation (PSV) record for this lake and to correlate it with other Holocene PSV records from the East Africa Rift Valley (EARV). All three cores were sampled with u-channels and magnetic measurements of magnetic susceptibility, the natural remanence (NRM), and two artificial remanences, anhysteretic…

  • Timing of Sierra Nevadan stadial/interstadial variations from 15 to 56 ka

  • Paleomagnetic secular variation records from Holocene sediments of Lake Victoria (0.5°S, 33.3°E)

    Open Access•Steve P Lund, Steve Lund et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2020

We have conducted a paleomagnetic study of Holocene sediments from Lake Victoria in order to develop a high-resolution record of paleomagnetic secular variation (PSV). This study has recovered PSV records from two cores (V95-1P and V95-7P) in northern Lake Victoria (0.5°S). The PSV is recorded in fine-grained detrital magnetite/titanomagnetite grains, but the rock magnetic data suggest that significant magnetic mineral dissolution has occurred, w…

  • Paleomagnetic chronostratigraphy of late Holocene Zaca Lake, California

    Open Access•Steve P Lund, Ellen Platzman•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 2

We have developed a paleomagnetic secular variation (PSV) record from Zaca Lake, California, that spans the last ~3200 years. The record is derived from detailed (2 cm) sampling of core 09-1C, which is 873 cm in length. The paleomagnetic remanence is carried jointly by magnetite and greigite. The greigite appears to form in the anoxic bottom water of the lake and/or at the sediment/water interface. The paleomagnetic remanence has a very simple ch…

  • A Holocene pollen record of persistent droughts from Pyramid Lake, Nevada, USA

    Open Access•Scott Mensing, Scott A Mensing et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2004

Pollen and algae microfossils preserved in sediments from Pyramid Lake, Nevada, provide evidence for periods of persistent drought during the Holocene age. We analyzed one hundred nineteen 1-cm-thick samples for pollen and algae from a set of cores that span the past 7630 years. The early middle Holocene, 7600 to 6300 cal yr B.P., was found to be the driest period, although it included one short but intense wet phase. We suggest that Lake Tahoe w…

  • Decline of surface temperature and salinity in the western tropical Pacific Ocean in the Holocene epoch

Open Access•Lowell D Stott, Lowell Stott et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2004

  • Influence of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation on the climate of the Sierra Nevada, California and Nevada

    Open Access•Larry Benson, Braddock K Linsley et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2003

Mono Lake sediments have recorded five major oscillations in the hydrologic balance between A.D. 1700 and 1941. These oscillations can be correlated with tree-ring-based oscillations in Sierra Nevada snowpack. Comparison of a tree-ring-based reconstruction of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) index (D’Arrigo et al., 2001) with a coral-based reconstruction of Subtropical South Pacific sea-surface temperature (Linsley et al., 2000) indicates a …

  • Correlation of Late-Pleistocene Lake-Level Oscillations in Mono Lake, California, with North Atlantic Climate Events

    Open Access•Larry V Benson, Larry Benson et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1998

Oxygen-18 ( 18 O) values of sediment from the Wilson Creek Formation, Mono Basin, California, indicate three scales of temporal variation (Dansgaard–Oeschger, Heinrich, and Milankovitch) in the hydrologic balance of Mono Lake between 35,400 and 12,900 14 C yr B.P. During this interval, Mono Lake experienced four lowstands each lasting from 1000 to 2000 yr. The youngest lowstand, which occurred between 15,500 and 14,000 14 C yr B.P., was nearly sy…

  • Continuous Lake-Sediment Records of Glaciation in the Sierra Nevada between 52,600 and 12,500 14 C yr B.P

    Open Access•Larry V Benson, Larry Benson et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1998

The chemistry of the carbonate-free clay-size fraction of Owens Lake sediments supports the use of total organic carbon and magnetic susceptibility as indicators of stadial–interstadial oscillations. Owens Lake records of total organic carbon, magnetic susceptibility, and chemical composition of the carbonate-free, clay-size fraction indicate that Tioga glaciation began ∼24,500 and ended by ∼13,600 14 C yr B.P. Many of the components of glacial r…
