  • Drought response of stem growth and canopy of seven Central European tree species across deposition gradients

Open Access•Petr Fišer, Jiří Mašek et al.•ARTICLE•Trees Forests and People•2026

  • Rapid trend towards larger and more moisture-limited trees in Central-European temperate forests

Open Access•Václav Treml, Jan Tumajer et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

Tree stems represent a long-lived biomass compartment for atmospheric carbon sequestration. While terrestrial biosphere models predict rising carbon sequestration in forests, direct observations of tree growth are inconclusive due to varying standardization procedures of tree-ring series and complex factors influencing stem growth such as moisture and nutrient deficits and anthropogenic carbon and nitrogen fertilization. The mismatch between tree…

  • Spatial patterns in recent forest growth trends across the Czech Republic

Open Access•Daniela Machová, Jakub Kašpar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2024

The radial growth of trees significantly contributes to climate change mitigation by sequestering carbon into woody biomass. Radial growth trends observed in European temperate forests during the recent period of climate warming vary between growth acceleration due to longer growing seasons and growth declines due to amplified drought stress. Assessing the spatial variation of growth trends is challenging due to the point relevance of available e…

  • Patterned ground above the alpine timberline in the High Sudetes, Central Europe

Open Access•Marek Křížek, David Krause et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2019

Patterned ground in mountainous areas has a high palaeogeographic significance as it is associated with cold environments and frequently with permafrost conditions. Most patterned ground (i.e. sorted polygons, sorted nets, sorted stripes) in the High Sudetes is overgrown by vegetation and is relict. However, wind-blown summit areas with low snow cover allow for the activity of sorted circles, earth and peat hummocks, and some non-sorted stripes. …

  • Late-Holocene human-induced changes to the extent of alpine areas in the East Sudetes, Central Europe

    Open Access•Jan Novák, Libor Petr et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 11

The easternmost parts of the Hercynian mid-mountains of Central Europe, namely Hrubý Jeseník and Králický Sněžník, are characterised by extensive alpine areas at altitudes above approximately 1300 m a.s.l. In order to determine the contribution of human activities to the extent of these summit grasslands we analysed charcoal assemblages and pollen profiles taken from high elevation sites. The first burn was dated to the Iron Age (about the first …
