  • Palaeoenvironmental changes and human-environment interactions in the surroundings of La Silla del Papa, SW Spain

Dominik Brill, Simon Matthias May et al.•PREPRINT•2024

The surroundings of the Strait of Gibraltar in southern Iberia are well known as a crossroads for population movements, cultural exchange and trade from Late Prehistory to Modern Times. However, questions remain about how this historical development has impacted the environment. The settlement of La Silla del Papa, an important hillfort located in the Sierra de la Plata in southern Andalusia (Cádiz), and its territory represent an ideal location …

  • Nonmarine Ostracoda as proxies in (geo‐)archaeology — A review

Open Access•Ella Quante, Anna Pint et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2022

Ostracods as bioindicators are extremely useful for reconstructing palaeoenvironment and palaeoclimate and can also indicate the provenance of sediments and materials, for example, in studies on ancient commercial networks. Ostracods are small crustaceans that live in almost all aquatic habitats, both natural and man‐made. Due to their calcitic carapace, they have high fossilization potential, and their use in geoarchaeology has been steadily inc…

  • Holocene coastal evolution and environmental changes in the lower Río Guadiaro valley, with particular focus on the Bronze to Iron Age harbour ‘Montilla’ of Los Castillejos de Alcorrín (Málaga, Andalu…

Open Access•Simon Matthias May, Helmut Brückner et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2022•References: 11

Phoenicians were the first to systematically develop the area surrounding the Strait of Gibraltar at the end of the 9th century B.C. Following pioneering studies in the Río Guadiaro estuary (Málaga/Cádiz) in the 1980s, a German‐Spanish cooperation project focussed on the role of indigenous people in the Phoenician colonisation trading networks at Los Castillejos de Alcorrín (Manilva, Málaga), one of the most important Early Iron Age settlements i…

  • Mid- to late-Holocene sea-level evolution of the northeastern Aegean sea

    Open Access•Martin Seeliger, Anna Pint et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 11

We combined biostratigraphical analyses, archaeological surveys, and Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA) models to provide new insights into the relative sea-level evolution in the northeastern Aegean Sea (eastern Mediterranean). In this area, characterized by a very complex tectonic pattern, we produced a new typology of sea-level index point, based on the foraminiferal associations found in transgressive marine facies. Our results agree with the…

Open Access•Simon Matthias May, Maike Norpoth et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 16

In southern Iberia, the surroundings of the Strait of Gibraltar are known as a crossroad for population movements, cultural exchanges, and trade from Late Prehistory to modern times. However, questions remain about the impact of this historical development on the environment. The settlement of La Silla del Papa, an important hillfort in southern Andalusia (Cádiz), was occupied during the entire Iron Age, replaced by the coastal town Baelo Claudia…

    Open Access•Anna Pint, Heike Schneider et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•References: 5

We test several methods of ostracod-based palaeoenvironmental reconstruction using indicator species approach, mutual ecological/climatic range methods, transfer functions, modern analogue technique and morphological variation within Cyprideis torosa in reconstructing the site evolution of a late Quaternary small lake basin in Thuringia, Central Germany. Sediment sections containing a diverse ostracod fauna were studied and compared with those fr…

Open Access•Daniel Kelterbaum, Helmut Brückner et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 6

This project has reconstructed the palaeogeographic and environmental evolution of L ake C hokrak on the K erch P eninsula, U kraine, during the mid‐ and late‐Holocene. This record has been evaluated in association with a regional archaeological data set to explore human–environment interactions over this period. The results show major changes in the palaeogeographic setting of L ake C hokrak since the 3rd millennium B . C ., when the postglacial…
