  • Two chironomid-inferred mean July air temperature reconstructions in the South Carpathian Mountains over the last 2000 years

    Open Access•Zoltan Szabo, Krisztina Buczkó et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2024•References: 13

We present chironomid-based reconstructions of mean July air temperature changes over the last 2000 years from Lake Latoriței (1530 m a.s.l.) in the Southern Carpathians. A multi-proxy analysis was performed along a 58 cm long sediment core and two training sets were used for quantitative July air temperature reconstructions: the Eastern-European (EE, 212 lakes) and the Finnish-Polish-Carpathian (FPC, 273 lakes). The transfer functions had a coef…

  • Sediment contributing invasive dreissenid species in a calcareous shallow lake – Possible implications for shortening life span of lakes by filling

Open Access•Katalin Báldi, Csilla Balogh et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2019

Although the ecosystem transforming impact of the invasive dreissenid mussels has been widely reported in short-to-mid time scale studies, little is known about the contribution of the spent shells to sediments accumulating on the lake bottom. The question whether the shell production significantly reduces the lifespan of the lake by increasing sedimentation rate is particularly interesting in those shallow lakes where the calcium supply is suffi…

  • Kehida-Fövenyes 8–9. századi népességének történeti embertani vizsgálata

Open Access•Krisztián Kiss, Tamás Szeniczey et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2019

In our work, 167 individuals from the Late Avar Period cemetery of Kehida-Fövenyes (8–9th century) were analysed. Altogether 65 children, 36 males and 50 females were examined, however in the case of 16 adults the sex determination was not possible. The newborn age group (0–1 year) is underrepresented in the cemetery. A biological imbalance can be observed between the ratio of males and females. According to the demographic data and pathological …

  • Providing long environmental records of Late Quaternary climatic oscillations in the South Carpathian Retezat Mountains (PROLONG) – an introduction to the project

Open Access•Enikő Katalin Magyari, Daniel Veres et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2018

  • Reconciling diverse diatom-based lake responses to climate change in four mountain lakes in the South-Carpathian Mountains during the last 17 kyrs

Open Access•Krisztina Buczkó, Erzsébet Szurdoki et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2018

  • Terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem responses to early Holocene rapid climate change (RCC) events in the South Carpathian Mountains, Romania

Open Access•Ilona Pál, Krisztina Buczkó et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2018

  • Small-scale moisture availability increase during the 8.2-ka climatic event inferred from biotic proxy records in the South Carpathians (SE Romania)

    Open Access•Ilona Pál, Enikő K Magyari et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016

In this paper, we present high-resolution early Holocene pollen, plant macrofossil, charcoal, diatom, biogenic silica, and loss-on-ignition records from a mountain lake in the South Carpathians in order to reveal ecosystem response to the 8.2-ka climatic oscillation. We found significant changes both in terrestrial vegetation and lake diatom assemblages in the northern slope of the Retezat Mts between c. 8300 and 8000 cal. yr BP. Rapid changes in…

  • Chironomid-inferred Holocene temperature changes in the South Carpathians (Romania)

    Open Access•Mónika Tóth, Enikő K Magyari et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 18

We present a Holocene summer air temperature reconstruction based on fossil chironomids from Lake Brazi (1740 m.a.s.l.), a shallow mountain lake in the South Carpathians. Summer air temperature reconstruction was performed using transfer functions based on the Swiss (Sw-TF) and the merged Norwegian–Swiss calibration data set (NS-TF). Our results suggest that summer air temperatures increased rapidly from the onset of the early Holocene onwards ( …

  • A chironomid-based reconstruction of late glacial summer temperatures in the southern Carpathians (Romania)

    Open Access•Mónika Tóth, Enikő K Magyari et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2012

Late glacial and early Holocene summer temperatures were reconstructed based on fossil chironomid assemblages at Lake Brazi (Retezat Mountains) with a joint Norwegian"Swiss transfer function, providing an important addition to the late glacial quantitative climate reconstructions from Europe. The pattern of the late glacial temperature changes in Lake Brazi show both similarities and some differences from the NGRIP δ 18 O record and other Europea…
