  • Commentary on the Syria case

    Open Access•C P Kelley, Colin Kelley et al.•ARTICLE•Political Geography•2017•Cited by: 4

  • Comparing hurricane and extratropical storm surge for the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast Coast of the United States for 1979–2013

    Open Access•James F Booth, Harald E Rieder et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

This letter examines the magnitude, spatial footprint, and paths of hurricanes and extratropical cyclones (ETCs) that caused strong surge along the east coast of the US between 1979 and 2013. Lagrangian cyclone track information, for hurricanes and ETCs, is used to associate surge events with individual storms. First, hurricane influence is examined using ranked surged events per site. The fraction of hurricanes among storms associated with surge…

  • Old World megadroughts and pluvials during the Common Era

    Open Access•Edward R Cook, Robin Seager et al.•ARTICLE•Science Advances•2015

An atlas of megadroughts in Europe and in the Mediterranean Basin during the Common Era provides insights into climate variability.

  • Mediterranean climate future

    Open Access•Yochanan Kushnir•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2015

In a new investigation of model projections of greenhouse gas warming impact on the Mediterranean, Zappa et al (2015 Environ. Res. Lett. 10 104012 ) find that the decline in basin-wide precipitation scales linearly with the strength of the 850 hPa zonal wind over North Africa. This result supports previous findings that climate change will affect the Mediterranean primarily through changing the regional atmospheric circulation. The results of thi…

  • Human adaptation strategies to abrupt climate change in Puerto Rico ca. 3.5 ka

    Open Access•Isabel Rivera-Collazo, Amos Winter et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•Cited by: 8•References: 9

The connection between climatic change and social response is complex because change articulates a number of inter-related factors. Human decisions are filtered by social buffers – including social memory, risk perception, and cultural priorities – and the rate and scale of climate change is usually much larger than the scale of human decision-making. In this article, we provide information on climate change based on precisely dated speleothems w…

  • Model Projections of an Imminent Transition to a More Arid Climate in Southwestern North America

Open Access•Robin Seager, Richard Seager et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2007

How anthropogenic climate change will affect hydroclimate in the arid regions of southwestern North America has implications for the allocation of water resources and the course of regional development. Here we show that there is a broad consensus among climate models that this region will dry in the 21st century and that the transition to a more arid climate should already be under way. If these models are correct, the levels of aridity of the r…
