A quantitative high-resolution summer temperature reconstruction based on sedimentary pigments from Laguna Aculeo, central Chile, back to AD 850
We present a pigment-based quantitative high-resolution (five years) austral summer DJF (December to February) temperature reconstruction for Central Chile back to AD 850. We used non-destructive in situ multichannel reflection spectrometry data from a short sediment core of Laguna Aculeo (33°50′S/70°54′W, 355 m a.s.l., central Chile). Calibration-in-time (period AD 1901—2000, cross-validated with split periods) revealed robust correlations betwe…
Three decades of dating recent sediments by fallout radionuclides
This paper reviews the 210 Pb dating programme carried out at the University of Liverpool over a period of three decades since its inception by Frank Oldfield in the mid-1970s. The work at Liverpool has included studies of the basic processes controlling the supply of 210 Pb to the various natural archives, as well as the development of a detailed and systematic methodology for dating the environmental records in these archives. The assumption th…
Vegetation history in western Uganda during the last 1200 years
Pollen, plant macrofossil and charcoal records from two neighbouring crater lakes (Lake Wandakara and Lake Kasenda) in lower montane (altitude-1200m) western Uganda (0.5DN, 30) reveal major changes in local and regional vegetation over the last 1200 years, which can be related to regional variations in climate (especially effective precipitation) and human impact. The biological signals are supplemented by evidence from physical sedimentary analy…
The late-Holocene history of Gormire Lake (NE England) and its catchment
Sedimentary evidence spanning the last 3500 years from cores taken from the centre of Gormire Lake, Cleveland, northeast England, points to two periods of deforestation and catchment erosion. The first, mainly late Iron Age/Romano-British phase, began c. 200 BC and ended c. AD 600. The second began c. AD 1200, the time of early Monastic activity, and continued into the nineteenth century. The chronology for the core rests on 137 Cs, 210 Pb and 14…
Holocene tidal levels and sedimentation rates using a diatom-based palaeoenvironmental reconstruction
An established diatom-based tidal level transfer function is used in combination with the present day relationship between sedimentation rate and altitude to reconstruct Holocene tidal sediment accretion for the Tees estuary, northeastern England. The results from five cores reveal two periods of enhanced sedimen tation, the earlier of which (8000–6000 cal. BP) is related to relatively rapid sea-level rise and increasing tidal range. The later ph…
History of Atmospheric Lead Deposition Since 12,370 14 C yr BP from a Peat Bog, Jura Mountains, Switzerland
A continuous record of atmospheric lead since 12,370 carbon-14 years before the present ( 14 C yr BP) is preserved in a Swiss peat bog. Enhanced fluxes caused by climate changes reached their maxima 10,590 14 C yr BP (Younger Dryas) and 8230 14 C yr BP. Soil erosion caused by forest clearing and agricultural tillage increased lead deposition after 5320 14 C yr BP. Increasing lead/scandium and decreasing lead-206/lead-207 beginning 3000 14 C yr BP…
Individual flood events detected in the recent sediments of the Petit Lac d'Annecy, eastern France
A 90-cm long freeze core from the Petit Lac d'Annecy was sampled at 1-cm intervals and studied using magnetic measurements, chemical element and pollen analysis. The results reveal four distinctive horizons in each of which the different lines of evidence point to deposition during a single, major flood event. The magnetic evidence shows that the sediment deposited in each event included a high proportion of surface-soil derived material and this…
Sedimentary records of the extent and impact of atmospheric contamination from a remote Siberian highland lake
The Central Asian Khamar Daban Mountain Range (SE Siberia) is a remote region with softwater lakes that probably receive atmospheric pollution from local industry as well as via long-distance transport. Palaeolimnological evidence of the impact of atmospheric pollution at one isolated and otherwise undisturbed highland site in the Khamar Daban, Lake Kholodnoye, was obtained. Short sediment cores were analysed for radio-isotopes, to establish a se…
Sedimentary records of recent environmental change in Lake Baikal, Siberia
Lake Baikal is the world's largest freshwater lake and is internationally famous for its rich and largely endemic biota. Concern about this unique ecosystem has grown since the late 1970s but whether recent biological changes result from natural fluctuations or pollution is unclear. One way of discriminating between these processes is to examine records of recent change in radiometrically dated deep-water sediment cores. Here we use high-resoluti…
Dating of recent lake sediments in the United Kingdom and Ireland using spheroidal carbonaceous particle (SCP) concentration profiles
Spheroidal carbonaceous particles (SCPs) produced from fossil-fuel combustion are found in lake sediments and provide a historical record of atmospheric pollutant deposition. The sediment record of these particles is remarkably consistent and the main features are now seen throughout Europe and beyond. Once the SCP record from a region has been established using accurately dated cores, SCP profiles can be used to determine dates at other sites in…
Radiometric dating (210Pb, 137Cs, 241Am) of recent ombrotrophic peat accumulation and evidence for changes in mass balance
The paper summarizes and evaluates the results of 210 Pb, 137 Cs and 241 Am analysis on 37 recent ombrotrophic peat profiles. From these and previously published data, it is concluded that radiometric measurements alone cannot be relied on to give an accurate chronology of peat accumulation. Where constrained by profiles of 241 Am activity in the upper part and one or more pollen-dated horizons below this, 210 Pb can provide good chronologies of …

The record of land use change and soil erosion in the late Holocene sediments of the Petit Lac d'Annecy, eastern France
Pollen, chemical and magnetic analysis of a 6 m core from the Petit Lac d'Annecy provides a record of land use change and soil erosion spanning the last 2000 years. Variations in the magnetic properties of the sediments, especially above 3 m in the core, can be linked to the history of soil inwash over the last 1000 years. These changes, together with parallel ones in element concentrations and pollen frequencies (both concentrations and percenta…
