Ambiguities of Dependence’: Past and Present in Southern Africa’s Political Practice
Apartheid's Moral Scaffolds: Personhood and the Making of Difference from Below along the Southern African Frontier
This article explores how moral communities that emerged along frontiers of settlement in southern Africa mediated colonial categories of difference. The existing literature’s emphasis on assimilation as the political tradition of Africa’s settled peoples has muted an enquiry into how indigenous institutions can themselves fashion difference and segregate settling populations even as they assimilate newcomers into political and cultural life. A home of one’s own: Women and home ownership in the borderlands of post-apartheid South Africa and Lesotho
This study explores women’s practice of acquiring, “growing” and multiplying a “home of one’s own” in the borderlands of the Free State province of South Africa and Lesotho. A woman establishes a home of one’s own as a domain of autonomy (ha ka) where she can reproduce persons for whom she provides…
Black Landlords, their Tenants, and the Natives Land Act of 1913
This article uses an important family archive – that of the Molemas, educated and influential Barolong notables – as a key source in analysing the relations between black landlords and their tenants in the Molopo Reserve. Silas Molema was one of the most influential Barolong chiefs, whose territories spanned ‘British Bechuanaland’ (incorporated into the Cape in 1895) and the Bechuanaland Protectorate. The Molopo Reserve had negotiated a status gu…
Luka Jantjie: Resistance hero of the South African frontier
Kevin Shillington's (1985) The Colonisation of the Southern Tswana (1870–1900) certainly remains the key text in the history of conquest of the Batswana kingdoms that lie south of what we know today as Botswana. In 1895 this enclave of Batswana kingdoms, including the Batlhaping, were incorporated into the Cape Colony, while their northern neighbours remained as the Bechuanaland Protectorate. To date the historical literature on these southern st…
