  • Social Stratification in the Sahel

Cédric Jourde•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of the African…•2021

This chapter explores the politics of social status hierarchies in the Sahel (freeborn, “castes,” slaves) and the rich literature devoted to this theme. It looks specifically at two themes. First, the paradoxical relationship between Islam and social status stratification. The doctrinal equality of the believers before God has often been negated in practice, as “freeborn” lineages have taken over positions of Islamic leadership. But recently some…

  • The politics of the Hajj organisation in Senegal

Open Access•Cédric Jourde, Marie Brossier et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Modern African…•2021•References: 42

This article analyses how the state in Senegal has managed the hajj since the liberalisation era in the early 2000s. Although the essence of the hajj is religious, it is also deeply political and requires that the state manages complex relations with pilgrims, religious leaders, private travel agencies, politicians and Saudi authorities. This article argues that three inter-related imperatives structure the conduct of the Senegalese state: a secu…

Cédric Jourde, Marie Brossier et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of African…•2019

  • Betrayal, Heresy, Exile and Mystical Attacks

Cédric Jourde•CHAPTER•Islamism and Social Movements in…•2018

In Senegal and Mauritania (and beyond), various Sûfi and Islamist movements compete to attract the faithful. But they evolve in societies in which Islam is not the only identity marker: ethnicity intersects religion. Switching from one Muslim movement to another, a form of defection, can trigger harsh reactions from ethnic kin. Looking at the largest ethnic minority group in Senegal and Mauritania, the Fulbe (or Haalpulaaren), this paper construc…

    Cédric Jourde•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary African…•2017•Cited by: 9•References: 22

Groups, movements and political parties that directly invoke Islam as their raison d’être constitute key players in the Sahel. Analysts rightfully take this Islamic dimension quite seriously as they try to understand the dynamics of security in the region. In doing so, however, it is important not to forget other forms of solidarity which intersect with Islam. Ethnicity and social status (‘caste’) are categories that impact in various ways the mo…

  • Politique des récits de l'islamisme en Mauritanie

    Cédric Jourde•ARTICLE•Politique africaine•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 2

  • Political Islam in West Africa

Robert B Charlick, Momodou N Darboe et al.•BOOK•Political Islam in West Africa•2007

Long before the September 11 attacks galvanized Western attention on what has variously been called political Islam, Islamic fundamentalism, and Islamism, African nations with sizeable Muslim populations were experiencing significant transformations in the relationship between religion and state. Political Islam in West Africa explores those ongoing transformations in key countries of the Sahel region. Each country chapter provides both historica…

The literature on democratization and authoritarian survival has rightfully studied the role external forces play in such processes. These external actors and structural constraints are said to be especially substantial when dealing with small and poor authoritarian states. Although this literature acknowledges that small states are not entirely powerless when confronting hegemonic external forces, little effort has been made to refine and specif…

  • The President Is Coming to Visit

    Cédric Jourde•ARTICLE•Comparative Politics•2005•Cited by: 23•References: 13

Since 1989 research in comparative politics has focused largely on democratic tran sitions and consolidation. The entrenchment of semiauthoritarian regimes after the initial wave of political liberalization has yet to be thoroughly analyzed. The time is nigh to answer Brownlee's call to explore the tide after the third wave.1 Although regimes that have adopted initial democratic reforms while successfully maintaining an authoritarian core have st…

    Open Access•Cédric Jourde•ARTICLE•African Issues•2001•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Since the establishment of party politics in colonial Mauritania, and especially since independence in 1960, the Mauritanian political arena has been marked by ethnic tensions. The best example is certainly the ethnic violence that occurred at the end of the 1980s between the Arab-Berbers (Bidhan) and the “Black Africans.” But in Mauritania, as in other countries marked by ethnic tensions and conflicts, it would be an analytical mistake to overlo…
