  • European summer temperatures since Roman times

    Open Access•Jürg Luterbacher, J Werner et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

The spatial context is criticalwhen assessing present-day climate anomalies, attributing them to potential forcings and making statements regarding their frequency and severity in a long-term perspective. Recent international initiatives have expanded the number of high-quality proxy-records and developed new statistical reconstruction methods. These advances allow more rigorous regional past temperature reconstructions and, in turn, the possibil…

  • Continental-scale temperature variability during the past two millennia

    Open Access•Moinuddin Ahmed, PAGES 2k Consortium et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Geoscience•2013

  • A 1500-year reconstruction of annual mean temperature for temperate North America on decadal-to-multidecadal time scales

Open Access•Valerie Trouet, Henry F Díaz et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2013

We present two reconstructions of annual average temperature over temperate North America: a tree-ring based reconstruction at decadal resolution (1200–1980 CE) and a pollen-based reconstruction at 30 year resolution that extends back to 480 CE. We maximized reconstruction length by using long but low-resolution pollen records and applied a three-tier calibration scheme for this purpose. The tree-ring-based reconstruction was calibrated against i…

  • Palaeoenvironmental reconstructions using the modern analogue technique

    Open Access•David Lytle, David E Lytle et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2005•Citada por: 5•Referências: 1

Palaeoenvironmental information is often extracted from pollen records using the modem analogue technique (MAT). It is largely unknown how sensitive the MAT is to subsampling-induced variation in pollen assemblages, or to the decision rules used to reconstruct climate and vegetation. We examine these issues in a Monte Carlo framework in which simulated pollen assemblages at eight count sizes were created from four fossil pollen assemblages. Simul…

  • A statistical approach to evaluating distance metrics and analog assignments for pollen records

    Open Access•Daniel G Gavin, W Wyatt Oswald et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2003

The modern analog technique typically uses a distance metric to determine the dissimilarity between fossil and modern biological assemblages. Despite this quantitative approach, interpretation of distance metrics is usually qualitative and rules for selection of analogs tend to be ad hoc . We present a statistical tool, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, which provides a framework for identifying analogs from distance metrics. If …

  • A Late Holocene Paleoecological Record from Torrey Pines State Reserve, California

    Open Access•Kenneth L Cole, Eugene R Wahl et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2000

Paleoenvironments of the Torrey Pines State Reserve were reconstructed from a 3600-yr core from Los Peñasquitos Lagoon using fossil pollen, spores, charcoal, chemical stratigraphy, particle size, and magnetic susceptibility. Late Holocene sediments were radiocarbon dated, while the historical sediments were dated using sediment chemistry, fossil pollen, and historical records. At 3600 yr B.P., the estuary was a brackish-water lagoon. By 2800 yr B…
