  • A speleothem record of seasonality and moisture transport around the 8.2 ka event in Central Europe (Vacska Cave, Hungary)

Open Access•Attila Demény, György Czuppon et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2024

A stalagmite was collected in northern Hungary from the Vacska Cave, where monitoring and ventilation-based site selection had been conducted. The stalagmite covers the 10–8 ka (relative to AD 1950) period, including the so-called 8.2 ka event, and showed preceding signs of climate change that were evaluated by petrographic observations, 14 C activities, Sr concentrations, and stable isotope compositions of calcite and inclusion-hosted water. Com…

  • The Sisal webApp: Exploring the speleothem climate and environmental archives of the world

Open Access•István Gábor Hatvani, Zoltán Kern et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2024

We present the ‘SISAL webApp’—a web-based tool to query the Speleothem Isotope Synthesis and AnaLysis (SISAL) database. The software provides an easy-to-use front-end interface to mine data from the SISAL database while providing the SQL code alongside as a learning tool. It allows for simple and increasingly complex querying of the SISAL database based on various data and metadata fields. The SISAL webApp version currently hosts SISALv2 of the d…

  • Seasonal trends in the Early Twentieth Century Warming (ETCW) in a centennial instrumental temperature record from Central Europe

Open Access•Tímea Kocsis, Rita Pongrácz et al.•ARTICLE•Hungarian Geographical Bulletin•2024

The goal of the present paper is to investigate whether any objectively defined and statistically significant changes can be discovered in one of the longest homogenized instrumental temperature records in East-Central Europe. Thus, it is hoped that the present analysis will add to earlier attempts and elucidate the persistence of the warming period observed in the early 20th century. Similar to the global tendency, the Early Twentieth Century Wa…

  • Provenance groups in a Roman jet jewelry collection at Aquincum (Budapest, Hungary) and comparison with jet and jet-like gemstones

Open Access•Attila Demény, Mária Bondár et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2024•References: 2

Jet and jet-like gemstones are found in graves from the Neolithic, but they became particularly popular during the Bronze Age and the Roman period. To discover their provenance, several techniques were used to determine distinctions between organic materials and occurrences. The present study utilized a combination of Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopic (FTIR) and stable isotope ratio analyses to compare a unique Copper Age black bead („Lell…

  • The impact of social status and biological sex on diet at 10th century CE Hungarian sites from stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses

Open Access•Ariana Gugora, Attila Demény et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2024•References: 20

This is the first comprehensive stable isotopic research on Hungarian populations performed from start to finish in Hungary. • At Karos-Eperjesszög, there were no statistically significant differences in animal protein consumption among social classes. • Adult males at Tiszanána appear to have had preferential access to animal protein. • C 3 plants dominated diet at all sites, but C 4 plants, like broomcorn millet, were also consumed, mostly at K…

  • Holocene hydrological changes in Europe and the role of the North Atlantic ocean circulation from a speleothem perspective

Open Access•Attila Demény, Zoltán Kern et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2021

Societal concerns about future hydroclimate changes urge a thorough understanding of the governing processes. Here, an analysis of Middle and Late Holocene speleothem-based hydroclimate reconstructions and paleoclimate model simulations reveals sub-millennial fluctuations in the spatiotemporal variability of precipitation in the European and Mediterranean regions, that complements previous dendrochronological and pollen-based reconstructions with…

  • Speleothem Records from the Eastern Part of Europe and Turkey—Discussion on Stable Oxygen and Carbon Isotopes

Open Access•Zoltán Kern, Attila Demény et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2019

The region comprising of East Central Europe, South East Europe and Turkey contributed to the SISAL (Speleothem Isotopes Synthesis and AnaLysis) global database with stable carbon and oxygen isotope time-series from 18 speleothems from 14 caves. The currently available oldest record from the studied region is the ABA-2 flowstone record (Abaliget Cave; Hungary) reaching back to MIS 6. The temporal distribution of the compiled 18 records from the r…

  • North Atlantic influences on climate conditions in East-Central Europe in the late Holocene reflected by flowstone compositions

Open Access•Attila Demény, Zoltán Kern et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2019

  • Assessment of the interaction between surface- and groundwater after the diversion of the inner delta of the River Danube (Hungary) using multivariate statistics

Open Access•Balázs Trásy, József Kovács et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropocene•2018•References: 102

  • Natural proxy records of temperature- and hydroclimate variability with annual resolution from the Northern Balkan–Carpathian region for the past millennium – Review & recalibration

Open Access•Zoltán Kern, Alexandra Németh et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2016

  • Developments in water quality monitoring and management in large river catchments using the Danube River as an example

    Open Access•Deborah V Chapman, Chris Bradley et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2016•Cited by: 3
