  • Rethinking Holocene landscape evolution at Olympia (Greece)

    Open Access•Alfred Vespremeanu‐Stroe, Luminiţa Preoteasa et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2026

The lower Alpheios valley hosts one of the most emblematic archaeological landscapes of the Mediterranean world, where long-term environmental dynamics shaped the development and functioning of the sanctuary of Olympia. Understanding the Holocene evolution of the Olympia plain is therefore central to geoarchaeological interpretations of river dynamics, landscape accessibility, and site preservation. Recently, the traditional fluvial interpretatio…

  • Large Rivers, Small Rivers

    Open Access•Alfred Vespremeanu-Stroe, Daniel Garvan et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2026

The spatial distribution of Chalcolithic settlements in the East Lower Danube Plain (SE Romania) shows markedly higher densities along small river valleys with low modern discharges, such as the Călmățui, Mostiștea, and Teleorman, which originate in the upper plains (150–300 m a.s.l.). In contrast, valleys of larger Carpathian-sourced rivers (e.g., Buzău, Ialomița, Argeș), host far fewer settlements. Our research explores whether these patterns r…

  • Exploring human–landscape interactions in the Northern Balkans

  • Paleoecological data complete historical and archaeological archives

This study reconstructs the paleoecological settings of Chilia/Licostomo, the most important Genoese colony in the Danube delta. Our paleoenvironmental data (i.e., sedimentology, pollen, charcoal, radiocarbon ages) corroborate historical and archaeological information over the last seven centuries to document the habitation at Chilia and its military and socioeconomic activity during ca. 14th–19th centuries A.D. Palynological data show the contin…

  • Wetlands and lakes formation and evolution on the Lower Danube Floodplain during Middle and Late Holocene

    Open Access•Laurențiu Țuțuianu, Alfred Vespremeanu-Stroe et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2021

  • Late-Holocene landscape evolution and human presence in the northern Danube delta (Chilia distributary lobes)

    Open Access•Luminiţa Preoteasa, Alfred Vespremeanu‐Stroe et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 8

This paper documents the Late-Holocene environmental changes and human presence in the northern Danube delta using a multidisciplinary approach that combines geoscientific data with archaeological findings, historical texts, and maps. It follows the formation and progression of the Chilia distributary and the reconfiguration of socioeconomic activities. Sedimentary facies identified on five new cores by changes in texture properties, magnetic sus…

  • Neolithic to modern period palaeogeographic transformations in southern Danube delta and their impact on human settlements in the Enisala-Babadag region

  • Formation of Danube delta beach ridge plains and signatures in morphology

    Open Access•Alfred Vespremeanu-Stroe, Alfred Vespremeanu‐Stroe et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2016

  • The impact of the Late Holocene coastal changes on the rise and decay of the ancient city of Histria (southern Danube delta)
