Comprehensive Sexuality Education in Early Childhood: Challenging Normative Assumptions and Exploring Pedagogical Possibilities
Sexual Health Education in Early Childhood: Examining Early Years Frameworks Across Canada
In this paper, the authors draw on a reconceptualist framework to explore if and how sexual health content is addressed in provincial/territorial/Indigenous early years frameworks across Canada. Specifically applying a postdevelopment lens, this study examines how principles of the Canadian Guidelines for Sexual Health Education are present, absent, or alluded to in the early years frameworks in Canada. Findings show that explicit references to s…
Toby Goes to Catholic School: Gender Expression Human Rights, and Ontario Catholic School Board Policy
In this article, we share findings from an analysis of Ontario Catholic school board policy documents (N = 179) containing Canada’s newest human rights grounds: gender expression and gender identity. Our major finding may be unsurprising—that Ontario Catholic boards are generally not responding to Toby’s Act (passed in 2012) at the level of policy, as few boards have added these grounds in a way that enacts the spirit of that legislation. While t…
Disrupting the trans-versus-Catholic dichotomy: An example from a Canadian elementary school policy
Background: Mainstream media is increasingly reporting on the relationships between Catholic and trans identities in parochial schools, particularly with regard to gendered washroom use. With greater numbers of trans youth coming out at younger ages, significant educational policy changes are being considered around how Catholic schools can or should include trans youth. Method: This study applies trans and queer theologies to Critical Discourse …
Contested spaces: Trans-inclusive school policies and parental sovereignty in Canada
This article analyses five public consultation meetings about revisions to an LGBTQ-related school board policy on unceded Coast Salish territory in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. These meetings focused largely on the new provision that students in publicly funded schools be allowed to use the washroom that corresponds with their gender identity. Almost all of the objections to the policy revisions were articulated by parents of non-queer, …
SlutWalk: Contextualizing the movement
Philosophy of Education: Introductory Readings, 4th edition (2013)William Hare & John P. Portelli, editors
Introductory Readings is a welcome addition to the canon of edited philosophy of education textbooks.Although the editors emphasize its purpose as a text for undergraduate or pre-service students in faculties of education, the typical time constraints on foundations courses make it unlikely that the 472-page volume would be read in its entirety over a semester.Although written for undergraduate students of education, Philosophy of Education would…
Some Liken It to the Arab Spring’: Youth and the politically legitimate subject
This critical discourse analysis of 16 newspaper articles, editorials, and letters to the editor examines comparisons made between the Arab Spring and the Quebec student strike to discern what these comparisons tell us about perceptions of civically engaged youth involved in collective action. The texts were drawn from major Canadian daily newspapers and English language student newspapers using a keyword search and then analyzed for their repres…
Trends in Canadian Newspaper Coverage of Gay–Straight Alliances, 2000–2009
Gay–straight alliances (GSAs) in Canadian public schools have gained considerable attention from print media since reports first surfaced in the year 2000. This study tracked and analyzed Canadian newspaper reporting about GSA creation. It summarized the shift in public opinion toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth activism by analyzing how Canadian newspapers reported on emerging GSAs. The emergence of Canadian GSAs…
