  • Relative importance of hydrological and climatic controls on Holocene paleoenvironments inferred using diatom and pollen records from a lake in the central Hudson Bay Lowlands, Canada

    Open Access•Charlotte Friel, Charlotte E Friel et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•References: 6

Postglacial paleoenvironmental changes and landscape development in the Hudson Bay Lowlands in subarctic Canada were inferred using sediment properties and diatom and pollen assemblages in the sediments of a lake raised above the surrounding peatlands in an ice-marginal landform. Coarse-grained, inorganic sediments at the base of the Lake AT01 core suggest a high-energy periglacial environment, following isostatic emergence from Hudson Bay around…

  • Pollen evidence for major shifts in forest composition since the mid‐nineteenth‐century in the vicinity of Sudbury, Ontario

    Open Access•Randy W Dirszowsky, Sarah A Finkelstein et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Geographies /…•2013•References: 26

Numerous anthropogenic stressors have impacted the region surrounding Sudbury, Ontario, leading to pronounced vegetation and landscape change. Few long‐term records exist to understand the nature or timing of this change. We use pollen analysis from radiometrically dated sediments of Clearwater Lake to compare pre‐ and post‐settlement vegetation. Beginning ∼1850 CE, the record shows major shifts in forest composition, coincident with settlement a…

  • A 6000-year record of ecological and hydrological changes from Laguna de la Leche, north coastal Cuba

    Open Access•Matthew Peros, Matthew C Peros et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2007

Laguna de la Leche, north coastal Cuba, is a shallow (≤ 3 m), oligohaline (∼ 2.0–4.5‰) coastal lake surrounded by mangroves and cattail stands. A 227-cm core was studied using loss-on-ignition, pollen, calcareous microfossils, and plant macrofossils. From ∼6200 to ∼ 4800 cal yr BP, the area was an oligohaline lake. The period from ∼ 4800 to ∼ 4200 cal yr BP saw higher water levels and a freshened system; these changes are indicated by an increase…

  • Paleoenvironmental records of water level and climatic changes from the middle to late holocene at a Lake Erie coastal wetland, Ontario, Canada

    Open Access•Sarah A Finkelstein, ANTHONY M DAVIS et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2006

Pollen and diatom assemblages, and peat stratigraphies, from a coastal wetland on the northern shore of Lake Erie were used to analyze water level and climatic changes since the middle Holocene and their effects on wetland plant communities. Peat deposition began 4700 cal yr B.P. during the Nipissing II transgression, which was driven by isostatic rebound. At that time, a diatom-rich wild rice marsh existed at the site. Water level dropped at the…

  • Stratigraphic investigations at Los Buchillones, a coastal Taino site in north‐central Cuba

Open Access•Matthew Peros, Elizabeth Graham et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2006•Cited by: 1•References: 5

The authors present stratigraphic data from Los Buchillones, a now submerged Taino village on the north coast of central Cuba that was occupied from some time prior to A.D. 1220 until 1640 or later. Los Buchillones is one of the best‐preserved sites in the Caribbean, with material culture remains that include palm thatch and wooden structural elements from some of the more than 40 collapsed structures. The purpose of this study was to investigate…

  • Identifying fossil wild rice (Zizania) pollen from Cootes Paradise, Ontario

  • Floodplains and Agricultural Origins

Gary W Crawford, David Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•1998•Cited by: 4•References: 27

Human interaction with riverine ecology is an important component of recent modelling of agricultural origins in eastern North America. Recent research on the ancestral Ontario Iroquoian Princess Point Complex (A.C. 500–900) in south-central Ontario, Canada, demonstrates that the floodplain of the Grand River was an important setting for initial maize production in this region. This paper presents a case study of an archaeological occupation in r…

  • Sedimentology and Palynology of Middle Wisconsinan Deposits in the Pecatonica River Valley, Wisconsin and Illinois

Open Access•G Richard Whittecar, ANTHONY M DAVIS et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1982

The bedrock valley of the Pecatonica River north of Freeport, Illinois, contains a thick valley-fill complex of alluvium and drift. Within the valley, loess-capped benches surround hills of silty Illinoian drift. Beneath these benches lie thick deposits of poorly sorted stony silt interbedded with thin lenses of silt, sand, and organic-rich loam. Channel deposits and peat cap the diamicton in places. We interpret the stony silts as solifluction d…

  • The Prairie-Deciduous Forest Ecotone in the Upper Middle West∗

    ANTHONY M DAVIS, Anthony M J Davis•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•1977•Cited by: 4

The prairie–deciduous forest ecotone changes from a distinct boundary in northern Minnesota to a fragmented mosaic type in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois. The differences largely can be attributed to topography and fire, but edaphic factors, the survival of disjunct relicts, and the differential migration rates of some taxa are contributory. Fossil pollen spectra from the Driftless Area attest to the persistence of the mosaic character throughout …
