Family Rituals in the Hungry Ghost Festival
This article explores why individuals in China undertake numerous tasks for souls and spirits whether or not they believe that these beings exist. We shift away from Eurocentric approaches to studying religion which have been centered around conceptualizing belief as cognitive assent to a theological or cosmological statement. Instead, we outline a multiplex structure of beliefs sustaining religious and spiritual action. Using the case of the Hun…
Regulatory effects of ectomycorrhizal fungi on the morphological construction of Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica seedlings under exogenous nitrogen input
This study investigated how ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal inoculation affects the rhizosphere microenvironment and growth of Pinus sylvestris var . mongolica seedlings under different nitrogen (N) addition levels. Results showed microbial diversity and biomass exhibited threshold responses to N. Under ECMF inoculation, low N (LN) increased bacterial diversity (Chao1 index +13.40 %) and microbial biomass phosphorus (+139.20 %), whereas high N (HN) …
Wasserstein Dependent Graph Attention Network for Collaborative Filtering With Uncertainty
Collaborative filtering (CF) is an essential technique in recommender systems that provides personalized recommendations by only leveraging user-item interactions. However, most CF methods represent users and items as fixed points in the latent space, lacking the ability to capture uncertainty. While probabilistic embedding is proposed to intergrate uncertainty, they suffer from several limitations when introduced to graph-based recommender syste…
Multimodal Contrastive Transformer for Explainable Recommendation
Explanations play an essential role in helping users evaluate results from recommender systems. Various natural language generation methods have been proposed to generate explanations for the recommendation. However, they usually suffer from two problems. First, since user-provided review text contains noisy data, the generated explanations may be irrelevant to the recommended items. Second, as lacking some supervision signals, most of the genera…

Effect of parenting style on the emotional and behavioral problems among Chinese adolescents
Resilience could partially mediate the relationship between parenting style and EBPs, highlighting that parents should adopt a positive parenting style and that resilience improvement could be effective in reducing EBPs among Chinese adolescents
Courting a Blue Sky? Understanding the Constrained Judicialization of Environmental Governance in China
This paper studies the constrained judicialization of environmental governance in China. It starts by quantitatively describing the judicialization of environmental protection in China over the past decade, including both its progresses and the suppressions that it faced, and shows that environmental courts have had virtually no tangible impact on reducing pollution levels. It then attempts to rationalize the observed patterns by answering two qu…

The role of leptin in indirectly mediating “somatic anxiety” symptoms in major depressive disorder
Our finding that leptin was a significant and indirect mediator of clinical status (MDD or FDR-MDD) and "somatic anxiety" symptoms suggests that leptin may indirectly affect somatic depressive symptoms in MDD. Our findings may provide a theoretical basis for novel clinical interventions in MDD
Impulsivity, Social Support and Depression Are Associated With Latent Profiles of Internet Addiction Among Male College Freshmen
Background: The rate of internet addiction is increasing in college students. The first year at college is a particularly vulnerable period for internet addiction. Students' psychological characteristics are likely to play an important role in internet addiction. Our study aimed to assess the relationship between impulsivity, social support, depression and internet addiction among male college freshmen. Materials and Methods: The current study ut…

Judicial Transparency as Judicial Centralization
The mass publicity of court decisions in China, this article argues, is part of the larger trend of the Chinese judiciary becoming increasingly centralized. The transparency reform enables the Supreme People’s Court to control the information reporting process within the judicial hierarchy and rein in local courts through public scrutiny. Interestingly, local courts responded strategically, making disclosure far poorer than required. Meanwhile, t…
Densely Connected Convolutional Networks
Recent work has shown that convolutional networks can be substantially deeper, more accurate, and efficient to train if they contain shorter connections between layers close to the input and those close to the output. In this paper, we embrace this observation and introduce the Dense Convolutional Network (DenseNet), which connects each layer to every other layer in a feed-forward fashion. Whereas traditional convolutional networks with L layers …
