  • Acquiring vulnerability indicators to geo-hydrological hazards

Open Access•Paola Salvati, F Ardizzone et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2021

Geo-hydrological risk reduction is a key issue for local governments in Italy. In this context, a collaboration was undertaken between multiple actors in the La Spezia municipality aimed at: (i) monitoring building characteristics, using specific and valuable indicators, and (ii) increasing the knowledge of geo-hydrological hazards across residents and local land planners (iii) implementing local emergency civil protection plan. An extensive mobi…

  • Exposure to landslides in rural areas in Central Italy

Open Access•Michelle Santangelo, Irina Marchesini et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2021

Starting on 24th August 2016, Central Italy was struck by a six-month earthquake sequence that caused 303 victims and extensive major damages to urban areas and infrastructures, in some cases entire villages needed complete rebuilding. In this paper we present a map that portrays the overall susceptibility to multiple landslide types and the exposure to landslides of the rural-urban areas of the Castelsantangelo sul Nera Municipality, a typical v…

  • A review of statistically-based landslide susceptibility models

Open Access•Paola Reichenbach, Mauro Rossi et al.•ARTICLE•Earth-Science Reviews•2018

In this paper, we do a critical review of statistical methods for landslide susceptibility modelling and associated terrain zonations. Landslide susceptibility is the likelihood of a landslide occurring in an area depending on local terrain conditions, estimating “where” landslides are likely to occur. Since the first attempts to assess landslide susceptibility in the mid-1970s, hundreds of papers have been published using a variety of approaches…

  • Landslides in a changing climate

    Open Access•Stefano Luigi Gariano, Fausto Guzzetti•ARTICLE•Earth-Science Reviews•2016

Warming of the Earth climate system is unequivocal. That climate changes affect the stability of natural and engineered slopes and have consequences on landslides, is also undisputable. Less clear is the type, extent, magnitude and direction of the changes in the stability conditions, and on the location, abundance, activity and frequency of landslides in response to the projected climate changes. Climate and landslides act at only partially over…

  • Photo-geology of the Montefalco Quaternary Basin, Umbria, Central Italy

Open Access•F Bucci, Francesco Mirabella et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2016

We present a photo-geological map for the 185 km2 fault-bounded, Montefalco Basin, Umbria, Central Italy. The basin formed in the Quaternary in response to extensional tectonics dissecting folds and thrusts of the northern Apennines range. To prepare the 1:25,000 geological map, we integrated geological and morphological information obtained through the visual analysis of three sets of aerial photographs of different age, the collection of new fi…

  • Landslide inventory map of the upper Sinni River valley, Southern Italy

Open Access•Michelle Santangelo, Michele Santangelo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2015

In this paper, we present a geomorphological landslide inventory map for an intermountain catchment in the southern Italian Apennines. The study area is seismically active, and it is characterized by high uplift rates produced by Quaternary tectonics. A total of 531 landslides of different types, relative age, and sizes, including some kilometer-scale relict landslides were mapped through the visual interpretation of 1:33,000-scale stereoscopic a…

  • Landslide inventory maps

Open Access•Fausto Guzzetti, Alessandro Mondini et al.•ARTICLE•Earth-Science Reviews•2012

Landslides are present in all continents, and play an important role in the evolution of landscapes. They also represent a serious hazard in many areas of the world. Despite their importance, we estimate that landslide maps cover less than 1% of the slopes in the landmasses, and systematic information on the type, abundance, and distribution of landslides is lacking. Preparing landslide maps is important to document the extent of landslide phenom…

  • Landslide inventory map for the Briga and the Giampilieri catchments, NE Sicily, Italy

Open Access•F Ardizzone, Giuseppe Basile et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2012

On 1 October 2009, a high intensity storm hit the Ionian coast of Sicily, SW of Messina, Italy. The Santo Stefano di Briga rain gauge, located 2 km W of the Ionian coast, recorded 225 mm of rain in seven hours. The intense rainfall event triggered abundant slope failures, and resulted in widespread erosion and deposition of debris along ephemeral drainage channels, extensive inundation, and local modifications of the coastline. Landslides occurre…
