Iambic Trimeter in lyricis
A review of extant scholarly positions regarding the ancient notion of parakatalogē is presented in this paper, which then sets out an analysis of the use of iambic trimeter in lyricis in Aeschylus’ tragedies. The purpose is to identify possible parameters that would allow us to distinguish its different modes of performance: spoken, recitative, parakatalogē and song
Ancient Greek Metrics and Music
This paper contains a survey of studies that demonstrate a new sensitivity, established over time, towards the performative dimension of ancient Greek poetic texts. Focus on the public and on the idea of consumption less as reading and more as a ‘show’ first emerged in the 1980s if not earlier, and at the same time more in-depth research on music has had a great impact on metrical studies, giving metricists a new opportunity to distance themselve…
Il dialogo tra Clitemestra e il Coro nella scena finale dell’ Agamennone (vv. 1407-1576) Struttura strofica, drammaturgia, assetto lirico
The paper examines the final scene of the Agamemnon , and particularly the impressive musical section, with the dialogue between Clytemnestra and the Chorus, immediately preceding the concluding intervention by Aegisthus (vv. 1407-504). The articulated strophic structure of the entire section is analysed from the point of view of dramaturgy and scenic rendering; on this occasion, some precise critical-textual and methodological considerations are…
Ditirambo e tragedia sofoclea
The essay aims to comment the text of the Vita Sophoclis 23, where it is reported that Sophocles introduced the Phrygian melody in his songs mixing it with the dithyrambic style. The analysis is conducted on the background of the intellectual climate that characterized Sophocles’ century, and of the recent musical trends. It is argued there that Sophocles was not immune from the so called ‘New Music’. His dramatic songs seem to configure as an im…
Aeschylus, Eumenides 778–1020. Observations on the Form of the Lyric-Epirrhematic Amoibaion
Eumenides’ final scene, conceived as a sequence of two lyric-epirrhematic amoibaia, is examined from both a formal and compositional perspective. A critical apparatus, an apparatus of ancient and modern colometries together with a metrical analysis are also presented. General evaluations are developed on the atypical dramaturgy of the two amoibaia where, despite their poematic form, no proper dialogue takes place, and on the artistic and semantic…
