  • A Nutritional and Anthropometric Analysis of the Double Burden of Malnutrition in Children Under Two in Madagascar

    Open Access•Rosita Rotella, María Morales‐Suárez‐Varela et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2025

Background : Almost half of all deaths worldwide in children under five are related to malnutrition. Malnutrition encompasses a wide array of nutritional conditions and emerging evidence indicates a growing overlap of these different forms of malnutrition. Nutrimetry, which combines assessments of height-for-age (HAZ) with BMI-for-age (BMIZ) to offer a more integrated assessment of nutritional status, can be particularly useful in low-resource se…

  • Assessment of Stunting and Its Effect on Wasting in Children Under Two in Rural Madagascar

    Open Access•Rosita Rotella, María Morales‐Suárez‐Varela et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2025

Stunting affected over half of the children included in the study (57.4%), but the prevalence of wasting was below what was expected, at 12.4%. In the preliminary speculative analysis using the expected height for age, it was estimated that wasting could possibly affect up to 42.3% of the children. This discrepancy, while it cannot be taken as factual due to the nature of the analysis, could serve as a warning that perhaps the elevated rates of s…

Open Access•M Ascensión Olcina Simón, José M Soriano et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2023

Nowadays, Ethiopia has several problems affecting children below 5 years of age, resulting in low life expectancies. Our group carried out a study to calculate the presence of malnutrition as wasting, stunting underweight, and BMI-for-age in children presenting in a nutrition center in a rural Ethiopian village in the Oromia region according to WHO guidelines. Our results demonstrated that they had moderate chronic malnutrition or stunting from 1…
