María Paz López Martínez, Carlos Sánchez-Moreno Ellart et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Reality of Women in the Universe…•2023

This volume gathers chapters related to the condition of women in the ancient novel. To broaden the perspective, it integrates not only papers dealing with the Greek and Roman novel as a literary genre in its own right, but also as a historical document involving aspects as diverse as history, archaeology, sociology and the history of law. The twenty-six contributions in this volume have been divided into thematic blocks, based on the different a…

  • Yawning matters

    Open Access•María Paz López Martínez, María P López-Martínez•ARTICLE•Ancient Narrative•2022

The aim of this study is to contextualize the fragments of the The Wonders beyond Thule in the set of lost Greek novels that have come to us in papyri paying special attention to the treatment of hiatus. The literary ambitions of Callirrhoe, Ninus, Parthenope, and The wonders beyond are similar and their ‘implicit readers’ would have belonged to the educated elite known by the term of pepaideumenoi and pepaideumenai. Other conclusion is that hiat…

  • Parthenope’s novel

Open Access•María Paz López Martínez, Consuelo Ruíz–Montero et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Narrative•2021

Our aim is to provide a new edition with translation and commentary of the second column of P. Berol. 7927 + 9588 + 21179, corresponding to the so-called Parthenope’s Novel. The first column was also edited by us in The Journal of Juristic Papyrology 28(2016), pp. 235–50. The original, perhaps one of the first Greek novels, produced a long and complex tradition with versions in prose and verse and a Christian martyrology, and was translated into …
