Open Access•Dejan Jontes, Tanja Oblak Črnič et al.•ARTICLE•Media and Communication•2023

Based on the assumptions that digital media are used as integrated structures or “polymedia repertoires” and that media practices cannot be treated as unrelated practices performed on distinct platforms, the present study examined the digital sociability of young people and their media prosumption in a polymedia environment. Data were collected from group interviews of 67 12- to 19-year-olds and 59 personal visualised media sketches. The study fo…

  • Clothing and Expressive Revolution

    Breda Luthar, Maruša Pušnik•ARTICLE•Fashion Theory•2021•References: 11

This study investigates jeans use as well as the discursive practices that framed jeans-wearing in 1960s and 1970s socialist Yugoslavia. We adopt a practice theory approach that goes beyond the expressive capacity of jeans and focuses on their material and practical capacity as an epitome of cultural transformation. Practices discussed include embodied practices enabled by jeans and those that have jeans as their target, such as smuggling, dreami…

  • Intimate media and technological nature of sociality

    Open Access•Breda Luthar, Maruša Pušnik•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2020•References: 18

The article argues for the audience studies, which draws on the analysis of artifactual, spatial, temporal, and sensorial aspects of media consumption and builds on, that is, the so-called medium theory and theory of practice in sociology. In the second part of the article, we interpret the results of a qualitative empirical study regarding the daily use of media technology among young people, aged between 19 and 29 years. The study finds that ci…

    Open Access•Breda Luthar•ARTICLE•Two Homelands•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 4

Avtorica v članku obravnava »begunsko problematiko« v oddaji Odmevi na slovenski javni televiziji. Zanima jo, kako konvencionalna naturalizirana pravila novinarske prakse in uprizarjanje nevtralizma kot sestavnega dela profesionalne samopredstave političnega novinarstva določajo obravnavo teme. V tem kontekstu analizira izbor »zunanjih« ali »prisvojenih« glasov v studijskih intervjujih v Odmevih ter diskurzivno umeščanje intervjuvancev v narativ …

  • Nation, Gender, Class

    Open Access•Breda Luthar, Andreja Trdina•ARTICLE•Slavic Review•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 9

In this article, we explore performance and the “dramatic realization” of local female social elites in popular mass-market magazines in Slovenia and Croatia between 2008 and 2011. We argue that popular culture—and, more specifically, celebrity discourse—is one of the central locations for analyzing cultural shifts in gender, nationality, and class in postsocialist society. At the center of the discussion is the argument that ethnicity should not…

  • Class, Cultural Capital, and the Mobile Phone

    Open Access•Breda Luthar, Samo Kropivnik•ARTICLE•Czech Sociological Review•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This article uses data from a representative survey on the applications of information and communication technologies to investigate the use of the mobile phone as a cultural object by different groups of respondents/consumers. Setting out from the premise that the symbolic and artefactual nature of new media, their 'thingness', should be a central part of any investigation of their social and cultural signifi cance, the article focuses on the me…

The article explores the representation of political celebrities and their families in photo-interviews in mass market women's magazines and the role of the local personality system in the process of building the nation after Slovenia's succession from Yugoslavia in the 1990s. My aim is to trace how a common national normality was redefined/performed through the celebrification and humanization of political figures in the popular media, and how c…
