Ensnared in a gay health controversy
This case study describes competing activist campaigns triggered by a provocative poster promoting safe gay sex, which became one of the most complained‐about outdoor advertisements in Australia. Drawing on issue management theory and personal interviews, the study analyses the contrasting strategies followed by two outdoor advertising companies caught up in the controversy, where family value advocates failed to consistently present their object…
Crisis leadership
Crisis leadership has become a strong element of crisis management scholarship, yet much of the published research is primarily observational, based on the performance of leaders in crisis situations or prescriptions for preferred behaviour. By contrast, this paper builds on in‐depth interviews with CEOs and top executives who provide a rare and remarkably frank view from the executive suite about the current state of crisis management and in par…
Embedding issue management as a strategic element of crisis prevention
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to characterize the danger period which extends before a crisis and to position issue management as an effective crisis prevention discipline. Integrating Issue Management and Strategic Planning
Issue management evolved from environmental scanning and other precursors to help business organizations recognize and respond proactively to an increasing variety of external issues beyond traditional economic and business-competitive challenges. Issue management
Of all the tools and techniques applied within the field of public affairs and corporate communication, Issue Management is undoubtedly the one which most often attracts excessive process at the expense of real progress. Understanding the causes and sources of this over-emphasis on process is important to the long-term success of issue management as an effective tool. That understanding is also important to the development of Issue Management mod…
Systematic objective setting for effective issue management
While a great deal of academic and practitioner effort has been devoted to understanding and formalizing objective setting in corporate strategic planning and in strategic communication, far less effort has been committed to objective setting for issue management. Within this context, setting a proper objective is sometimes swept aside in the ‘rush for results’ and, as a consequence, issue management efforts can be misdirected, misapplied and poo…
Issue definition
Many issue management models proceed from issue scanning and identification directly to determining an objective, with insufficient attention to the important element of formally defining the issue. Proper definition is a vital foundation for effective issue management, and comprises a sound understanding of the issue itself, choosing exactly the right words to best position the issue and securing agreement on the definition. It also requires a f…
