Living Traditions and Universal Conviviality: Prospects and Challenges for Peace in Multireligious Communities
The World Parliament of Religions adopted the view that there will not be peace in this world without including peace among religions. Yet, even with the unified force of the world’s religions and wisdom traditions, this cannot be accomplished without justice among people. In one way or another, “unity” among religions, as based on justice and the will to accept the other’s religions and even irreligiosity as means of justice, will not prevail wi…
The Narrative of Barbarism: Western Designs for a Globalized North
In the last quarter of the twentieth century South African author J. M. Coetzee wrote Waiting for the Barbarians. This novel, argu- ably the best-known book by the winner of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Literature, is an illuminating introduction to one of the most popular versions of the Western narrative of barbarism. The story takes place in a frontier city under the jurisdiction of a political entity known as “The Empire.” The civilized inhabitant…
Barbaric Paradoxes: Zionism from the Standpoint of the Borderlands
One of the most iconic stories of Western political Zionism is its founder’s alleged “conversion” to a nationalist project. Just prior to the turn of the twentieth century, Theodor Herzl, a young journalist from central Europe, was canvassing one of the most notorious cases of modern anti-Semitism: the Dreyfus affair. According to the now-legendary narrative, Herzl left Paris shocked by the case we discussed a few chapters hence. A perfectly assi…

Decolonial Judaism: Triumphal Failures of Barbaric Thinking explores the relationship among geopolitics, religion, and social theory. It argues that during the postcolonial and post-Holocaust era, Jew
Emmanuel Levinas’s Geopolitics: Overlooked Conversations between Rabbinical and Third World Decolonialisms
In this article, I re-evaluate critiques of Levinas’s Eurocentrism by exploring his openness to decolonial theory. First, I survey Levinas’s conceptual confrontation with imperialism, showing that his early Eurocentric work (1930s‐1960s) is revised in his later writing (1970s‐1980s). Second, I explore the contextual reasons that led him to take that path, such as his previously overlooked conversations with the liberationist South American intell…
