  • Reclaiming Rights and Justice

    Open Access•Siyuan Yin•ARTICLE•Labor Studies Journal•2026

Migrant rights and justice movements in Canada have arisen within an increasingly hostile political and discursive environment marked by restrictive immigration policies, precarious labor regimes, and the racialized marginalization of migrant communities. Yet these conditions have also generated various forms of collective resistance that contest the exclusionary boundaries of citizenship, labor rights, and national belonging. Drawing on a case s…

  • When Goods Were Odds

Open Access•Beidi Hu, Siyuan Yin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•2026

Much of the uncertainty people face is eventually resolved (e.g., a person entered in a raffle eventually learns what prize they have received). How do people evaluate goods (e.g., a prize of a $50 gift card) resulting from uncertain promotions (e.g., raffles)? Seven experiments (total N = 12,128) provide evidence for an uncertainty spillover effect: People prefer goods originating from uncertain prospects compared to those that were always known…

  • MobiTask

Open Access•Siyuan Yin, Haifeng Jiang et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Computational…•2025

In mobile crowdsensing (MCS), the quality of sensing is often enhanced through the rational allocation of tasks in the initial phase. However, during task execution, some participants may fail to complete their tasks on time, adversely affecting the overall completion rate. Although existing studies have introduced the concept of task migration, they lack a comprehensive migration strategy. To address this issue, we propose MobiTask, a federated …

  • Reference-Point Theory

    Open Access•Barbara A Mellers, Siyuan Yin•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Psychological…•2025

We propose an account of individual differences in risk preferences called “reference-point theory” for choices between sure things and gambles. Like most descriptive theories of risky choice, preferences depend on two drivers—hedonic sensitivities to change and beliefs about risk. But unlike most theories, these drivers are estimated from judged feelings about choice options and gamble outcomes. Furthermore, the reference point is assumed to be …

  • Qihuang Zhuyu formula modulates mitochondrial function to inhibit platelet activation via endocannabinoid signaling mediated by the Sirt1/PPARα pathway

Open Access•Ruijie Shi, Weixin Sun et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnopharmacology•2025

SIRT1 may mediate endocannabinoid signaling through its interaction with PPARα, regulating mitochondrial function and subsequently influencing platelet activation. QHZYF effectively modulates the endocannabinoid system via the SIRT1/PPARα pathway, thereby inhibiting platelet activation

  • Situating platform gig economy in the formal subsumption of reproductive labor

    Open Access•Siyuan Yin•ARTICLE•Capital & Class•2024•Cited by: 6•References: 35

In conversation with critical platform and labor studies, which tend to focus on drivers and food delivery workers, this article seeks to expand our understanding of the platform gig economy from the perspective of reproductive labor and migrant domestic workers. The exploitation of women's unpaid and low-paid reproductive work has persisted throughout various stages of capitalist development. Migrant domestic workers' underpaid reproductive labo…

  • Re-articulating feminisms

    Siyuan Yin•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies•2022

In recent years, feminism has gradually become a buzzword in the global hyper-commercialized popular culture. Young women and girls are encouraged to please and empower themselves through consumption and/or ‘leaning in.’ On the other hand, feminist activism and movements against gender inequality and injustice continue to flourish at the local, national, and transnational levels. Yet, as systematic oppression and violence persist and intertwine, …

  • Opening up mediation opportunities by engaging grassroots data

    Open Access•Yu Sun, Siyuan Yin•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2022•Cited by: 6•References: 11

This article explores the dynamics and practices of feminist data activism that engages with grassroots data to archive cases of sexual violence in China. Drawing on Cammaert’s notion of the mediation opportunity structure, we investigate the mediation process of a feminist data campaign and activists’ communicative practices in contemporary China. By practicing data-activist research, our study shows that the data-based action repertoire opens u…

  • Folk intuitions and the conditional ability to do otherwise

Thomas Nadelhoffer, Siyuan Yin et al.•ARTICLE•Philosophical Psychology•2020

In a series of pre-registered studies, we explored (a) the difference between people’s intuitions about indeterministic scenarios and their intuitions about deterministic scenarios, (b) the difference between people’s intuitions about indeterministic scenarios and their intuitions about neurodeterministic scenarios (that is, scenarios where the determinism is described at the neurological level), (c) the difference between people’s intuitions abo…

  • Towards a Marxist Critique of the Political Economy of Migration and the Media

    Open Access•Siyuan Yin•ARTICLE•tripleC Communication Capitalism…•2020

The global outbreak of COVID-19 has exposed varied ways that systemic inequality shapes people’s lives. This article pays particular attention to migrant populations. While mainstream media and political discourse tend to construct migration as a problem to be addressed or even the cause of social problems, the article contends that migration should be understood as an immanent part of capitalist uneven development, entwined with patriarchy and c…

  • Cultural production in the working-class resistance

    Siyuan Yin•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies•2020

Against the backdrop of China as a seemingly ideal model to justify and normalize capitalist globalization, this article seeks to demonstrate how grassroots and bottom-up resistance can disrupt hegemonic ideologies and dominant values. Based on ethnographic fieldwork with a local NGO and an activist group from March 2016 to July 2017, my study demonstrates that labour activism through cultural production becomes an important constitution of conte…

  • Intersectional digital feminism

    Siyuan Yin, Yu Sun•ARTICLE•Feminist Media Studies•2020•Cited by: 54•References: 10

Feminist media scholarship has been keen on explicating the ways that digital media have shaped feminist politics in recent decades. Through analyzing the MeToo movement in China, this study contributes to a further understanding of the role of digital media in facilitating feminist activism and movements. We propose a framework of intersectional digital feminism that embraces the perspectives of inclusion/exclusion, visibility/invisibility, and …

  • Alternative forms of media, ICTs, and underprivileged groups in China

    Open Access•Siyuan Yin•ARTICLE•Media Culture & Society•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 17

This article discusses uses of alternative forms of media and information communication technologies (ICTs) by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and advocacy organizations for underprivileged and marginalized groups in China, specifically rural-to-urban migrant workers. Drawing from the conceptual framework of alternative media and ICTs for social change, I analyze a local NGO’s community newspaper for migrant workers and an online advocacy m…
