    Open Access•Shuaib Meacham•ARTICLE•Dialogic Pedagogy: An International…•2026

This study examines suda (수다), a culturally specific form of open-ended conversational exchange, as practiced among early childhood educators in Oju, South Korea. While informal teacher dialogues have been explored in other cultural contexts, few studies have investigated suda as a dialogic practice with distinctive cultural features and professional learning potential. Drawing on interviews, ethnographic field notes, and selected excerpts from s…

Sophia Han, Jinhee Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Studying Teacher Education•2026

This study aims to explore how Asian American female faculty members in U.S. higher education experience and navigate social and academic dynamics. • Re)thinking Food and Food Practices in Early Childhood Education with Children through Suda (수다) Approach

    Open Access•Jinhee Kim, Su-Jeong Wee et al.•ARTICLE•Children & Society•2026

The study challenges the prevailing neoliberal perspectives on food and food practices in early childhood education. With globalisation and urbanisation, children have more opportunities to experience diverse cultural foods and food practices, which allows them to expand their culinary knowledge and preferences. However, food is frequently discussed only in binary terms, such as good versus bad, which reinforces power dynamics. Hence, there needs…

  • Children’s names and naming practices: Wrestling with racism in Asian American families

Jinhee Kim, Sophia Han et al.•ARTICLE•Diaspora Indigenous and Minority…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 9

A name is the starting point to acknowledge the existence of ourselves and others in our lives. However, we live in a society where name-based biases and discrimination have permeated. As transnational parent researchers, we examined our children’s names and naming practices through the practice of Suda [수다], which is an open-ended nonhierarchical conversational environment and deep/emotional storytelling, drawing on our own onto-epistemological …

  • Being (Asian) American children: Children’s exploration of racial/cultural identity and racism

    Su-Jeong Wee, Shuaib Meacham et al.•ARTICLE•Race Ethnicity and Education•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 14

This study explores young Asian American children’s emerging ideas of racial identity and experiences of racism through multimodal representations during the COVID-19 Pandemic. To explore children’s identity and understanding of racial experience, we used Suda (수다) with children, which refers to deeply engaged conversations and often involves participants’ emotions. Adopting autoethnography, we used multiple data sources, including documentation …

  • Re Zoom c ing Our Academic Home Using Suda (수다)

Open Access•Shuaib Meacham, Jinhee Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2022

This collaborative autoethnography describes the multiple subject positions and dynamics of our identities as transnational female teacher educators. Decolonizing mainstream epistemology and research tradition, we explore a unique dialogic research process called the suda methodology. The aims are twofold. First, to theorize suda as our framework as well as a research methodology, we explain, describe, and construct the meanings of suda, which is…

  • Danger in the safety zone: Notes on race, resentment, and the discourse of crime, violence and suburban security

    Cameron Mccarthy, Alicia P Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies•1997•Cited by: 7•References: 1

Sociology and education theorists writing on the subject of racial antagonism have tended to ignore the critical role played by popular culture and the electronic media in the reproduction of racial antagonism (Giroux, 1994b). Although there is a rise of a multicultural literature within the field that has from its inception drawn attention to the representation of minorities in educational and cultural forms, such writing has concentrated mainly…
