Moments and opportunities: Interstitials and the promotional imagination of BBC iPlayer
This article examines the promotion of the BBC's online streaming and download service, iPlayer, as it has been presented to audiences through broadcast television. Analysing transitions in the BBC's representation of iPlayer, it considers the promotional imagination of the service during the 2010s, a period when the Corporation was striving to communicate its digital identity and broaden iPlayer within mainstream use. Through industrial-textual …
Promotional Screen Industries
From the trailers and promos that surround film and television to the ads and brand videos that are sought out and shared, promotional media have become a central part of contemporary screen life. Promotional Screen Industries is the first book to explore the sector responsible for this thriving area of media production. In a wide-ranging analysis, Paul Grainge and Catherine Johnson explore the intermediaries – advertising agencies, television pr…
A song and dance: Branded entertainment and mobile promotion
This article considers the rise of branded entertainment within the contemporary marketing and media environment. Specifically, it examines how mobile phone marketing in the UK has sought to engage consumers and perform the social use of mobile technology through multimedia ad campaigns with an inscribed entertainment value. Focusing on brand campaigns for 3G mobile services that borrow explicitly from reality television (T-Mobile) and Hollywood …
Elvis sings for the BBC: Broadcast branding and digital media design
This essay uses a striking example of digital remix promotion - BBC Radio 2’s Elvis ad - to examine developments in the contemporary branding and broadcast environment. Developing work by John Caldwell, it examines the Elvis ad as a ‘deep text’, a promotionally reflexive articulation by media industries about the nature of corporate media identity and aesthetics. Suggestive of the BBC’s attempt since the late 1990s to make its brand ‘sing’, and r…
Film histories: An Introduction and Reader
The book is arranged chronologically, and each chapter contains an introduction by the editors on the key developments within the period, followed by a classic piece of historical research about that period. Various types of film history are undertaken in the articles, so that students can become familiar with different types of film historical research. For example, topics include the history of audiences; exhibition; marketing; censorship; aest…
The Politics of Polarisation: Affluence, Anxiety and the Cold War
This chapter discusses films in the 1950s — a decade of contradictions in society as well as cinema, a decade in which ideals such as a middle-class lifestyle, the model home, and marriage and parenthood were complicated and undermined by anxieties over gender roles and cross-generational tensions. The nuclear family ideal was of particular importance in the postwar period as a site of hope and regeneration. The chapter also includes the study, ‘…
The Age of the Dream Palace and the Rise of the Star System
This chapter discusses the age of the dream palace and the rise of the star system. By the end of the First World War, the cinema was an established cultural fact in an era of rapid social change. In America, theatres or dream palaces were crucial to the structuring of the film industry. They were the places where cinema came to the masses and the studios successfully exploited such venues as they did the movie stars under contract to them. The s…

Inside Popular Film is a forum for writers who are working to develop new ways of analysing popular film. Each book offers a critical introduction to existing debates while also exploring new approaches. In general, the books give historically informed accounts of popular film, which present this area as altogether more complex than is commonly suggested by established film theories.Developments over the past decade have led to a broader understand…
Remembering the `American century: Media memory and the Time 100 list
Inthis article, I consider a series of Time special issues, published in 1998 and 1999, that tried to estimate the `people' and `person' of the 20th century. Reading the series politically, I argue that Time engaged in a process of historical summary and cultural remembrance that serviced Henry Luce's prophecy of an American century, but that also aestheticized a national value system claiming primacy within the current, and prospective, climate …
Reclaiming Heritage: Colourization, Culture Wars and the Politics of Nostalgia
This article considers the discursive continuities between a specifically liberal defence of cultural patrimony, evident in the debate over film colourization, and the culture war critique associated with neo-conservatism. It examines how a rhetoric of nostalgia, linked to particular ideas of authenticity, canonicity and tradition, has been mobilized by the right and the left in attempts to stabilize the confguration and perceived transmission of A…
