  • Enhancing the Climate in Geography Through Diversity and Inclusion

Ann M Oberhauser, Barnali Dixon et al.•ARTICLE•The Professional Geographer•2026

Women and underrepresented groups in higher education face persistent barriers stemming from harassment, discrimination, and bias. This article examines gender and other inequities in higher education to highlight how these issues create a hostile climate for women and marginalized groups in the discipline of geography. Our analysis is grounded in a feminist conceptual framework and stress process theory and draws from survey data collected by th…

  • Gender and Knowledge Gatekeepers in Geography

Selima Sultana, Barnali Dixon et al.•ARTICLE•The Professional Geographer•2026

This article examines the intersection of gender and academic gatekeeping in geography, with a focus on two key entities: the American Association of Geographers (AAG) and academic journals. Whereas institutions are direct gatekeepers, professional organizations indirectly influence faculty, students, and publishers through journal outlets, networking opportunities, and recognition. Focusing on these entities, we aim to contribute to the discours…

Presidents of the American Association of Geographers (AAG) play crucial roles in the direction and health of the organization and the field of geography. Alluvial river landscapes of the lower Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers in the south-central USA are flood prone and have shifted historically in position and form, resulting in interventions for flood reduction, navigation, and water supply. Fisk mapped these landscapes in the middle of the twentieth century as a series of artistic colourful map plates. Selected areas are revisited with modern data sets (LiDAR from 2003, hydrographic surveys f…

Joann Mossa•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•2014•Cited by: 3

Due to increasing demands regarding student learning outcomes and accreditation, a capstone portfolio was added to assess critical thinking and communication skills of geography majors at a large public university in the USA. The portfolio guidelines were designed to be adaptable to a flexible curriculum where about half of the requirements within the major are structured. This paper discusses the portfolio requirements and assessment rubrics dev…

  • Topic synthesis

    Joann Mossa•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•1995•References: 1

Topic synthesis is an approach where students, rather than instructors, summarise the key points of the previous lecture at the beginning of the next class period. Benefits include opportunities for students to make oral presentations, new perspectives for the instructor from which to evaluate whether the key points were evident, and reinforcement of key concepts for the other students in the class. Initially, student reactions regarding topic sy…

This paper discusses the motivation, implementation and impressions of involving students in written and oral field guide contributions in two geography classes. This approach is especially useful in situations where the instructor is knowledgeable about the area but not an authority, such as in the case of a recent appointment. Various aspects of the experience, including the superior quality of participatory field guides and excursions as compa…
