Neoliberalism and Academia in Communication and Media Studies: A New Institutional Framework
The disciplinary field of communication refers to a changing object of study, whose material delimitation depends on the political, socioeconomic and technological contexts in which it develops. These factors must be considered as structural elements, as they determine the knowledge demands and agenda of academia. This article aims to describe the keys to understanding the influence of neoliberalism as an ideology and structure in the academic in…
Portraits of Muslim women in the Spanish press: The "burkini" and "burqa" ban affair
According to diverse reports and studies, islamophobia has become a social threat in the European context. Also, several investigations indicate that Muslim women are the main victims of this type of hostility (gender islamophobia), and stress that the media shows a stereotyped image of Muslim women. This paper aims to the study, from the theory of framing, the media image of Muslim women in the Spanish press. The study focuses on the news relate…
Journalism research: A dominant field of communication research in Spain. A meta-research on Spanish peer-reviewed journals (2000-2014)
Since the beginning of Democracy to the present day, "Journalism" has led Spanish communication research. This dominant presence has been especially important for the progressive internationalisation of Spanish research, which began during the early 2000s through the implementation of methodological standards in empirical studies. This paper aims to describe how researchers have developed journalism research published by four source peerreviewed …
Operationalization and theoretical construction are the two core elements that define research activity in any field of social sciences. By operationalizing a concept of social research, we refer to the process by which objects of study are defined by means of two successive types of cognitive action: the construction and replication of theoretical and methodological approaches, and the selection of empirical phenomena that represent abstract con…
